Faculty andDepartmentalResearch/ConsultancyUnits 125 established in 1986. Itwas thefirst inHong Kong in performing sleep researches as well as sleep assessments and treatment. Its research areas are the epidemiology and clinical aspects of varioussleep disordersincluding insomnia, sleep disordered breathing, narcolepsy, sleep changes in mental disorders, REM sleep behaviour disorder, and sleep habit and problems in Hong Kong children. The centre has served more than three thousand clients, and at the same time actively contributed to the formation of the Hong Kong Society of Sleep Medicine.It providestraining and teaching to many doctors, nurses, and technicians from other institutions in Hong Kong and on the mainland, and supports MPhil and PhD studies on sleep medicine. The Social and Public Health Psychiatry Unit Tel.:2632 3639 Fax.:2637 7884 The Social and Public Health Psychiatry Unit was established in March 1999 with aview to promoting research that is relevant to the sociocultural and public health aspects of a variety of mental and behavioural disorders that accompany social change, such as depression, neurasthenia, substance abuse and suicide, in Chinese society . These include, among o thers, the epidemiology of men tal disorders, primary care psychiatry, women’s health, stigma, access to care, health policy development, and the interactions between biology and local culture. Theoverall goal of the centre is promoting practice- based research and developing socialwork knowledge with a Chinese perspective. The centre pursues its overallgoal through conducting intervention research and empirical research o f Chinese social welfare, and forging a university-agency partnership to advance practice knowledge, technolo gy, and eviden ce-based practice. Other than carrying out practice-based research or empirical research of Chinese social welfare, the centre disseminates its research findings through publications, seminars, training, and other forms of activities deemed appropriate.
