Students concentrating in finance will learn the conceptual framework of modern finance, and how to analyse practical financial problems. Teachers in the department have a strong track record of research in theoretical and empirical finance and economics, and their findings have been published in leading professional journals. In collaboration with other departments in the faculties of business administration, engineering, and science, the department introduced a BSc Programme in Quantitative Finance in 1998–99, which offers courses in business, mathematics, statistics, and engineering. Graduates of the programme will be qualified to work in general finance as well as specialized areas such as derivatives and other financial instruments. In 2002, the department launched a BBA Programme in Insurance, Financial and Actuarial Analysis to meet the needs of the fast growing insurance and actuarial industries. The departments also contributes to concentration areas in the BA Faculty’s Integrated BBA undergraduate programme, and hosts an MSc in Finance Programme and an MPhil/PhD programme. Finance is also an intergral part of the curricula in the various MBA programmes the faculty offers. The basic objective of the BBA Programme in Hotel and Tourism Management is to train managers to make investment decisions and conduct business operations in hotel, tourism, and other related service industries. The curriculum emphasizes both theory and practice. In addition to the summer industry practicum, students are required to take core courses in business administration similar to those required of majors in the Integrated BBA Programme, as well as courses in hotel and tourism management, such as hospitality real estate and hospitality strategic management. The school has established a formal student exchange programme with the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University.
