Research Institutes and Centres 341 Institute of Precision Engineering Tel.: 2609 8469 Fax.: 2603 6002 E-mail: syho@acae.cuhk.edu.hk Website: http://www.ipe.cuhk.edu.hk The Institute of Precision Engineering is a strategic initiative of The Chinese University of Hong Kong dedicated to excellence and innovation in the research and development of precision engineering areas. It has been established since August 2005 through the generous funding by the Innovation and Technology Commission and the local manufacturing industry. Precision engineering refers to the science and technology of designing and manufacturing precision engineering devices, machines and systems. The mission of the institute is to invent, develop and deploy new and able technologies in precision engineering for the well-being of Hong Kong, the nearby Pearl River Delta area, China and the world. Short-term goals are to: • develop high-quality mechanical watch movements; • build up an international reputation on quality research and innovative products in precision engineering; • foster a group of highly qualified engineers and researchers in precision engineering design and manufacturing. Long-term goals are to: • become a leading precision engineering research centre in the world; • equip and upgrade the local industry into a magnet for precision engineering products, equipment and systems in the world; • invent and develop new breakthrough technologies in precision engineering; • explore new applications of precision engineering in other areas, such as nanotechnology, energy, biomedical engineering, optical manufacturing, and etc. Institute of Science and Technology Tel.: 2609 6354 Fax.: 2603 5315 E-mail: chiwu@cuhk.edu.hk kntsang@ie.cuhk.edu.hk The Institute of Science and Technology was first established in 1965 to promote interdisciplinary research in various faculties with particular emphasis on projects with long-term regional significance or application value. It is also an important vehicle for inter-institutional cooperation in scientific research and technological development, and consultation for industries, government departments, and other organizations. Under the institute are three major research centres.
