Research Institutes and Centres 349 locally and worldwide, and has received in recognition of this service several web awards, including the Britannica Internet Guide Award. So far, the centre has received two QEF grants and two RGC grants. Among the various projects carried out, the ‘Education Toward Biliteracy and Trilingualism: An Internet Support Project’ (QEF supported) was chosen as the most outstanding research project representative of the Arts Faculty for the year 2001–2002 (with feature published in the CUHK Annual Report , 2001–2002, p.37). Having acquired sufficient practical experience in conducting humanities computational research, the centre has also been providing consultation service to other units of the University, such as to the Department of Philosophy in the implementation of CUPID (or CU Philosophy Information Databases), and to other departments of the Arts Faculty in various RGC projects. There are now some 110 academic organizations worldwide directly engaged in research in phenomenology. The Research Centre for Phenomenology and the Human Sciences was established in March 2002 under the Research Institute of Humanities. Its mission is to promote research in phenomenology and its relationship to the human sciences, as well as to foster national and international exchange and cooperation in phenomenological research. Since its establishment, the centre has organized three international conferences, respectively on the themes of ‘Phenomenology and the Human Pathos’ (Sep 2002), ‘Identity and Alterity: Phenomenology and Cultural Traditions’ (May 2004), the latter being the first PEACE (Phenomenology for East-Asian CirclE) Conference, as well as ‘Philia and Sophia: Ten Years of Phenomenology in Hong Kong’ (May 2006). The centre has also organized four symposia from 2003 to 2005, respectively on ‘Phenomenology and Taoist Philosophy’ (Mar 2003), ‘Phenomenology and Buddhist Philosophy’ (Feb 2004), ‘Existence and Dialectics: Symposium on Sartre’s Centenary’ (Apr 2005) and a symposium for young Chinese scholars entitled ‘Phenomenology and the World’ (Dec 2005). Besides conference proceedings and research outputs of individual members, the centre has published the inaugural issue of Journal of Phenomenology and the Human Sciences (in Chinese) in 2004. Issue No. 2 of the Journal , special issue on ‘Phenomenology and Taoist Philosophy’, was published in December 2005. A special issue on ‘Phenomenology and Buddhist Philosophy’ as issue No. 3 is scheduled to be published in Winter 2006. The first volumes of the book series Phenomenology and the Human Sciences’ are also scheduled to be published in 2006–07.
