The unit conducts risk factor and epidemiologic research on suicide across the life-span in Hong Kong and mainland China, develops a suicide prevention programme in Hong Kong, and engages in systematic evaluation of programme efficacy, public education, and training of researchers. It is also involved in research collaborations locally, nationally and internationally. The main thrust of regular activities includes ongoing suicide research in collaboration with other academic institutions and health bureau in Hong Kong and mainland China. The unit collaborates with the University of Rochester’s Centre for the Study and Prevention of Suicide in an International Clinical, Operational and Health Services Research and Training Award Programme to facilitate training of Chinese researchers on suicidology. It also runs workshops for general practitioners on the management of suicide and common mental health problems in the community. When the latter changed its name to the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management in 1994–95, the unit too was renamed the Systems Engineering and Engineering Management Consultancy Unit. It provides the industrial sector and the academic community with consulting services such as expert advice, feasibility studies, system analysis and design, simulation, software and hardware development, customized seminars, and training courses. The unit is fully supported by the academic staff of the department, whose areas of specialization and industrial experience cover the main branches of systems engineering and engineering management, including information systems, financial engineering, logistics and supply chain management, e-commerce, machine intelligence, system sciences, system modelling, systems optimization, production management, management and decision science, and information management. It is also linked to the main University campus as well as hospitals in the New Territories East Cluster of the Hong Kong Hospital Authority. It organizes programmes in teleneuroradiology, telegeriatrics, teleendoscopy, and telepathology, as well as regular international teleconferences. It is also home to the Hong Kong Telemedicine Association.
