Faculty and Departmental Research/Consultancy Units 385 UGC-AoE Plant and Fungal Biotechnology Centre Tel.: 2609 8133 Fax.: 2603 6382 E-mail: aoe-biotech@cuhk.edu.hk Website: http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/bio/aoe/index.htm In the first round exercise of the Area of Excellence (AoE) funding scheme, the University Grants Committee allocated HK$38.8 million to ‘Plant and Fungal Biotechnology’. It was the first time that the Hong Kong government had invested so substantially in developing existing areas of strength of Hong Kong’s academic institutions into AoE and maintaining them among the world leaders. This project was the only science project of the first three AoEs selected for support. Led by the Chinese University, four tertiary institutes including the University of Hong Kong, the University of Science and Technology and the Hong Kong Baptist University pooled their expertise to establish a research and teaching centre that excels in state-of-the-art plant and fungal biotechnology. The mission of this project is to help develop Hong Kong’s high technology industry and to help meet the world’s increasing demands for food and healthcare products in the 21st century. This will be accomplished through innovative approaches and utilization of biotechnology to generate high-valued agricultural and healthcare products, to invent and transfer new technologies, and to train skilled technologists. Strategies involve application of cutting-edge technology such as DNA micro- array technique to facilitate crop improvement, unlocking valuable genetically- engineered and natural products for agricultural and pharmaceutical uses. Based at the Prince of Wales Hospital, the University Pathology Service provides a comprehensive range of general and specialized clinical laboratory tests and consultations for private patients and hospitals, and for pharmaceutical companies and research organizations, at competitive prices.
