Support Facilities, Services, and Staff Organizations 401 Computing Resources for Research, Academic and Administration Academic Staff and students can access a powerful and multi-purpose UNIX server that provides data library service, software packages, general UNIX applications and Internet applications for your academic computing needs. Research There are several High Performance Computing (HPC) systems with huge computational power to help researchers solve complex, highly calculation-intensive problems. University Administrative Information Systems There are several administrative systems that support automation of administrative processes and enhance the University’s efficiency. A Connected Campus The whole campus, including classrooms, student hostels, teaching blocks, academic and administrative buildings, are connected to the University Campus Backbone Network via high speed Gigabit Ethernet links. Connections within the campus network are 155Mbps or even up to a whopping 1000Mbps. Wireless Access Wireless network access is available at most outdoor areas on campus. Checking email, browsing web information or even accessing course material are no longer limited to indoors. HKIX ITSC also plays a crucial part in the provision of Internet services in Hong Kong. ITSC manages both the Hong Kong Internet eXchange (HKIX) and the Hong Kong Internet eXchange 2 (HKIX2), which act as neutral interconnection points for the routing of intra-Hong Kong and intra-Asia-Pacific Internet traffic. These Internet eXchanges greatly eliminate the necessity for diverting local network traffic outside Hong Kong, providing faster and less expensive paths to local sites. HARNET The campus network is also linked to the Hong Kong Academic and Research Network (HARNET), a local research network aiming at providing the local academic community with high-speed connectivity to the Internet and the Internet2. Information Security • An Anti-SpamAnti-Virus Gateway solution has been implemented on the Campus- wide Email System to protect users from virus and spam attacks. • Every university member can use a digital certificate for digitally signing email messages, or encrypting email messages to ensure that only the destined recipients can read the message content. Besides, digital certificates are also issued to on-line applications that require high security.
