CUHK Newsletter ANNOUNCEMENTS * Professorial Appointment Professor Ho Kam-fai has been appointed as Professor of Social Work with effect from 1st January, 1990. Aged 56 , Professor Ho graduated from The National Taiwan University and obtained his M.S.W. and D.S.W. from the University of Columbia in 1964 and 1974. He joined The Chinese University in 1964 as lecturer in social work, was promoted to senior lecturer in 1974 and reader in 1984. Professor Ho has also served concurrently as director of the Department of Extramural Studies since 1984. * The International Community Education Association (Asian Region) invites nominations for participation in the first Asian Regional Conference on Community Education for a Learning Society in the Context of Asian Heritage to be held at Kuala Lumpur from 17th to 20th September. Papers to be presented should be on the theme of community education, adult education, or population education, and should not exceed six pages in length. Successful nominees will be provided with free board and lodging. All other expenses including registration fee (US$75) wi ll be borne by the participant. All applications/nominations should be submitted to the Secretary, Academic Staff Review Committee via the department chairman and dean of faculty concerned by 9th March, 1990. Please direct any enquiries to Mr. H. K. Cheung, Personnel Section (ext. 2249). * The Institute of Chinese Studies invites applications for research grants for 1990/91. Interested staff members should send their applications to the Director of the Institute before 28th February. Application forms are obtainable from the General Office of the Institute (Rm.105, ext. 2393). Applicants are welcome to discuss the conception and development plan of their research projects with responsible officers at the Institute. * The Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning (ASAIHL) invites nominations for the following schemes for 1990/91: (1) Cathay Pacific Fellowship Scheme to support lecture tours by distinguished scholars or short visits by senior administrative staff for four to six weeks in at least two member institutions of ASAIHL with a minimum stay of two weeks at each institution. (2) Malaysian Airline System Fellowship Scheme to support academics to visit at least two member institutions of ASAIHL for four to six weeks with a minimum stay of two weeks at each institution. The Cathay Pacific Airways and the Malaysian Airline System will provide a round-trip economy- class ticket for (1) and (2) respectively. 11
