CUHK Newsletter University News Dona t i on of HK$5.4 Mi l l i on f rom the Croucher Foundation The University recently received donations totalling HK$5.4 million from the Croucher Foundation to launch six research projects: 1. HK$ 186,500 for a two-year research on ‘The testing of short screening questionnaires for detection of psychological distress in Chinese patients in Hong Kong' (Dr. N.F. Chan, Department of Community Medicine); 2. HK$760,000 for a three-year research project on ‘Ion implantation of advanced thin film materials' (Dr. S.P.Wong, Department of Electronics); 3. HK$2,000,000 for a three-year research project on 'Research in optoelectronics device technology' (Dr. E.Y.B. Pun, Department of Electronics); 4. HK$396,000 for a three-year research project on 'High performance composite materials' (Professor C.L. Choy, Department of Physics); 5. HK$2,000,000 for a three-year research project on 'Genetic reconstitution of high affinity uptake systems for neurotransmitters' (Professor D,M,K. Lam, Departments of Biology and Biochemistry); 6. HK$60,000 for a one-year research project on 'Sequencing of the ADHR gene' (Dr. K.K. Mark, Department of Biology). This is the largest grant vetted by the Trustees of the Croucher Foundation to a local tertiary institution in a single round. Research projects supported by the Foundation normally fall into areas of the natural, medical, health and engineering sciences. The Foundation would only consider applications submitted through the Vice-Chancellor's Office and the internal deadline for the submission of research proposals for the next round is 2nd April. T he Uni ted Nations Fellows Training Programme on Economic Informat ion System Management A United Nations Fellows Training Programme on Economic Information System Management was launched at the university on 2nd January, 1990. The first project of its kind carried out in Hong Kong by the United Nations, this training programme is technically supported by the United Nations Department of Technical Cooperation for Development, co-sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund, and implemented by The Chinese University. Dr. P.Y. Wong of the Centre for Contemporary Asian Studies is the programme director. The programme provides a six-month period of intensive course work and practical training to 19 Fellows who are currently technical 2
