The six unused embryos were frozen in liquid nitrogen and after subsequent thawing, four embryos were implanted in October resulting in an ongoing twin pregnancy. The twins are expected to be delivered in June 1990 and this will be the first time Hong Kong has produced test-tube babies from frozen IVF embryos. The CUHK IVF programme is carried out jointly by the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Anatomy. It also receives support from the Department of Chemical Pathology and the Lee Hysan Clinical Research Laboratory. In compliance with the Code of Practice on IVF, this research project on cryo-preservation has been approved by the Ethical Sub- committee of the faculty of medicine. Professor L i u I n Mao received Outstanding Research Award Professor Liu In Mao, head of the Department of Psychology, was presented the 1989 Outstanding Research Award by the Hong Kong Educational Research Association (HKERA) on 18th January. Established in 1984,the Award aims to promote high quality educational research among HKERA members. As there has been no qualified nomination in the past. Professor Liu is the first scholar to have received this award. His award-winning paper, entitled 'Memorial Consequences of Generating Words and Nonwords' has been highly recommended by two independent reviewers, a local and an overseas scholar of international renown, both of whom are experts in the same field. Conference on ‘Taiwan's Economy and Regional Interactions ’ The Japan Study Programme of the Centre for Contemporary Asian Studies hosted an international conference on 'Taiwan's Economy and Regional Interactions' from 16th to 17th January. Taiwan has experienced rapid economic growth over the last decade. There has been much expansion in the areas of foreign trade and investment, economic assistance to and unofficial interactions with different countries. The conference aimed at examining the interaction between Taiwan's economic growth and the developments in the Asia-Pacific regions, especially in mainland China and Japan. Over 50 scholars from China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, USA and Hong Kong took part in the conference and some 20 papers were presented. Two CUHK students - Mr. Ng Kwai-hang and Miss Chung Kin-mui from the Department of Journalism and Communication - have recently been C U H K Students Awarded Scholarships awarded the J. Walter Thompson Scholarships. The scholarships were first set up last year to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the J. Walter Thompson Company Ltd. They are awarded to outstanding students majoring in journalism, communication or marketing to encourage them to pursue a career in advertising or marketing after graduation. Each scholarship is worth HK$ 10,000. Another student, Mr. Chan Fung from the Faculty of Business Administration, received the HK$25,000 Merrill Lynch Scholarship for 1989/90. The scholarship is awarded each year to a student of outstanding academic achievements who also exhibits good leadership skills and a strong sense of responsibility. 4
