Newsletter No. 3

C UHK Newsletter Side Lights Tennis Champion: the Administration Team The finals of the VC's Cup Tennis competition took place on 17th January. The Administration team had aclose battle with the M edicine team before winning 5:4 in the nine-set match. The round robin system is adopted for all tennis matches in the tournament. Each team comprises six players, who are divided into three pairs. Each pair has to play 3 sets of doubles against the three pairs of the opposing team. There are therefore a total of nine sets in each match. Mr. David A. Gilkes, the captain of the winning team, considers his team lucky in managing to defeat the Medicine men, who have been very fearful opponents. He says all of his teammates love playing tennis and they practise regularly to stay in shape. They are now planning a little party to celebrate their second victory in two years. The players for 1989/90 are: David Gilkes (Bursary); Stanislaus Hu (Computer Science Centre); Ho Kam Fai (Extramural Studies); Spencer Wong (Extramural Studies); Christopher Nip (Dean of Students’ Office, New Asia) and Michael Chan (Computer Science Centre). Chung Chi College Library Expansion An additional floor will be built to the Chung Chi College Library to solve the problem of acute shortage of space. Construction work began in early February and is expected to be completed before the end of the year. The new floor (third floor) will provide an additional 800 square metres to be used as a stack area. Office-bearers of the New Asia College Staff Association New Asia College Staff Association held its first 1989/90 Executive Committee meeting in November and elected the following office-bearers for the current year: Chairman : Dr. Wong Wai-leung Vice-Chairman : Dr. Leung wing-pun Secretary : Mrs. Jane Lam Treasurer: Dr. Henry Wong Social Convenors : Mr. Clement So (Coordinator) Miss Kwan Choi-wah Mr. Lau Ho-fuk Dr. David Yew Dr. Walter King Stewards: Dr. Frederick Cheung (Coordinator) Mr. Stephen Tiong Mr. Kwong Kok-shi Dr. Chien Chiao Mr. Chow Yick-hay Letters to the Editor The amount of waste paper produced by the university is shocking. There is in fact atruck coming every day to collect waste paper for recycling but it seems that very few departments/units havemade an effort to save natural resources. I'd suggest that the Newsletter launch an appeal for all departments to collect their waste paper for recycling rather than just dump it along with garbage. Eva Hung Research Centre for Translation (Note from the Editor: We invite relevant units to write in and tell us more about the truck and the best ways of collecting waste paper for recycling.) Concerning your write-up on 'What if it rains on Congregation Day?' in the January issue of the Newsletter, the date of the installation of the closed-circuit TV system for the congregation ought to be 1976, the first time the ceremony was held at the campus. It was NOT an idea prompted by complaints from students and guests. Amy Yui (Note from the Editor: Ms. Yui was the person in charge of the planning of the 1976 congregation. Our reporter misunderstood the sequence of events in Ms. Yui's narration of the 1976 and 1977 congregations and we thank her for pointing out the error.)
