CUHK Newsletter 中大通訊 Vol.1 No. 8 July 1990 Four Honorary Degrees to be Conferred in October Four distinguished persons will be awarded honorary degrees at the 40th Congregation to be held on Thursday, 11th October 1990 in the University: Dr. the Hon. Allen Lee Peng-fei and Mr. James A. M. Kung will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa; Prof. David Todd, the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa; and Prof. Chang Kwang-chih, the degree of Doctor of Social Science, honoris causa. Dr. the Hon Allen Lee Peng-fei BS.D.Eng..CBE,JP,FHKIE Industrialist, member of the Executive Council, Senior Member of the Legislative Council. In his capacity as member of the Council of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and past chairman of the Council of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Lee has made significant contributions to the development of trade and industry in Hong Kong. For his outstanding achievements, he was awarded the Outstanding Young Persons Award in 1977 and the Asian Productivity Organization National Award in 1986. Dr. Lee is also actively involved in the development of local higher education. He has been a member of the Council of the University of Hong Kong, chairman of the Polytechnic Council and deputy chairman of the City Polytechnic Council. He has recently accepted an invitation to be amember of the Council of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and to chair the Board of Overseers of the Hong Kong Institute of Biotechnology. Mr. James Z M, Kung LLB.MBE.FAIA Chairman and Chief Manager of Chekiang First Bank Ltd. A prominent local banker, Mr. Kung is active not only in banking but also in the travel industry and education. He has made important contributions to the community by serving on various public bodies and committees. He is at present a member of the Banking Advisory Committee, director of the Travel Industry Council, and chairman of the Hong Kong Community Chest Executive Committee. He also sits on the Councils, of the Hong Kong Polytechnic and the Hong Kong Baptist College. Mr. Kung has been associated with The Chinese University since 1976 , when he became a member of the Chung Chi College Board of Governors. He was appointed to the University Council in 1981 and elected chairman of the Chung Chi Board of Trustees in 1986. All these years the University has benefited from his guidance and wise counsel. Prof. David Todd MBBS,MD.CBE,JP Professor of Medicine, University of Hong Kong Prof. Todd has taught at the University of Hong Kong for 37 years and made important contributions to the teaching of medicine and the training of generations of medical practitioners in Hong Kong. Apart from devoting himself to teaching and research, he has served on various educational and medical committees including the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Preparatory Committee, of which he is chairman; the University and Polytechnic Grants Committee, and the Committee on Management and Financing of Teaching Hospitals of the Provisional Hospital Authority. He is also the founder president of the Hong Kong College of Physicians and has been instrumental in making Hong Kong an overseas centre for the complete MRCP (UK) examination. He was conferred a CBE in 1982 for his outstanding contributions to medical affairs in Hong Kong. 1
