Statistics show that nasopharyngeal cancer is the second most common cancer in Hong Kong. An average of 1200 new cases are diagnosed each year. The disease is not infectious but there is a familial pattern in its occurrence. Those who have a family history of nasopharyngeal cancer are therefore in the high-risk group. With excellent treatment methods developed in Hong Kong over the years, a cure rate of over 90 per cent can be achieved if the disease is detected at an early stage. Early detection is therefore very important as it will result in more lives being saved and less suffering for patients. The screening programme is part of a larger effort to educate the public about the deadly disease and update the medical profession on the best techniques to screen and diagnose high-risk patients. Subjects enrolled will undergo blood tests and neck and nose examinations. A comprehensive medical check-up will be performed every six months by specialized staff. The screening programme is made possible by a research grant from the UPGC. Any one who wishes to enrol or know more about the programme should contact Ms. Chiu at 6362121 during office hours. Ex h i b i t i on on Cancer The Medical Society of the University held an exhibition on cancer last month at the City Hall, the New Town Plaza and the Hong Kong Cultural Centre respectively.
