Newsletter No. 19

CUHK Newsletter No.19 June 1991 Inkstone with sun-rising-from-sea design Duan stone, which is well-known for its fine, smooth and compact qualities. The Duan inkstone has long been treasured by the Chinese literati because it produces ink easily, without causing any damage to the brush. Extant Duan inkstones of the Tang to the Yuan dynasties are extremely rare. The seven pieces of pre-Ming inkstones in the exhibition came from archaeological excavations. Together, they demonstrate the common winnowing basket and chaoshou forms, as well as other simple and elegant shapes and decorations of the early inkstones. About 100 items in the exhibition are of the Ming and Qing periods. They show a great variety of natural markings, forms and carved decorations. Quite a number of them also carry literary inscriptions, a common characteristic of ail objects for the scholar's studio. The opening ceremony of the exhibition will be held at 4.30 p.m. on Friday, 28th June at the Art Gallery. Prof. Jao Tsung-i, honorary professor of fine arts, will officiate at the function. All are welcome.
