CUHK Newsletter -No.20 July 1991 Presentation Ceremony i n Honour of Dr. Cheng Yu Tung & Dr. Lee Shau Kee Yale University and The Chinese University of Hong Kong held a presentation ceremony on 20th June at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in honour of Dr. Cheng Yu Tung and Dr. Lee Shau Kee, who generously contributed US$6 million to the two universities for a joint research programme on South China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Prof. Benno C. Schmidt, Jr., president of Yale University, and Prof. Charles K. Kao, vice-chancellor of CUHK, officiated at the ceremony and presented medals and certificates of appreciation to Dr. Cheng and Dr. Lee. Prior to the ceremony, Prof. Schmidt and Prof. Kao met the local press to explain the significance of the collaborative research programme. The project will be jointly administered by the Council of East Asian Studies at Yale and the Hong Kong Institute of Asia Pacific Studies (HKIAPS) of CUHK. Prof. Yeung Yue-man, director of the HKIAPS, and Prof. William Kelly, chairman of the Council of East Asian Studies, also attended the press conference. The Queen's Birthday Honours l i st Three members of the University were on the Queen's Birthday Honours List 1991 issued last month. Dr. Wang Gungwu, a member of the University Council, was made a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE). The Hon. Chung Pui Lam, a member of the University Council, and the Hon. Andrew W. F. Wong, lecturer in government and public administration, were made Officers of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE). Open Forum on Chinese Medicine An open forum on Chinese medicine organized by the Chinese Medicinal Material Research Centre was held last month at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. The objective was to discuss recent developments in Chinese medicine in specific areas like scientific research, education, trading and legislation. Speakers included academic researchers, legislative councillors, pharmacists, and practitioners of Chinese medicine. 386 Awarded Diploma-in-Education This year, a total of 386 postgraduate students of the University's School of Education completed programmes leading to the Diploma-in-Education. Of these, 121 are from the one-year full-time programme, 137 from the two-year part-time evening programme and 128 from the two-year part-time day programme. Professor of Physiology Gives Inaugural Lecture Prof. Patrick Y. D. Wong, professor of physiology, gave his inaugural lecture on 31st May at Lecture Theatre I of the Lady Shaw Building. In his lecture entitled 'The Challenge of Male Contraception', Prof. Wong described the various new methods and approaches of male contraception, explaining their underlying principles and pointing out the merits and side effects of each. Prof. Wong believes that new technological advancements have made possible indepth study of human reproduction, and if male contraception is given the priority it deserves, a ‘male pill' will very soon emerge. Conference on International Relations i n the Asia-Pacific Region The Japan and Asia-Pacific Development Programme of the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies hosted an international conference on 25th and 26th June to investigate the development of international relations in the Asia-Pacific region since the 1980s. The conference comprised five sessions, covering a wide range of themes including international relations between China, Japan, Taiwan, and the Asia Pacific region and the prospects of economic cooperation in the area. Participants included Mr. Arthur W. Hummel, former US ambassador to China, Mr. Bert Levin, former US ambassador to Burma, and academics from the USA, Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. 2
