No.20 July 91 CUHK Newsletter Ordered Structures and Algebra for Computer Languages An international conference on 'Ordered Structures and Algebra for Computer Languages' was held from 26th to 29th June at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall The conference was organized by the Southeast Asian Mathematical Society (SEAMS) and cosponsored by the Hong Kong Mathematical Society and The Chinese University. Prof. Charles K. Kao, vice-chancellor of the University, officiated at the opening ceremony, and Prof. S. Mori of Kyoto University, Fields Medallist for 1990 , gave a keynote lecture on ‘Rational Curves on Algebraic Varieties'. About 100 mathematicians from different parts of the world attended the function. The Southeast Asian Mathematical Society was founded in 1972 under the International Mathematical Union. Dr. K. P. Shum, senior lecturer in mathematics of this university, is the current president of the society. College Graduations A total of 1,442 students graduated from the University's four constituent colleges this year, and college graduation ceremonies were held early last month on the campus. United College The 1991 graduation ceremony of United College was held on the morning of 1stJune at the SirRun Run ShawHall. Mr. Christopher Wigan, chief executive of Standard Chartered Asia, Ltd., and Mr. Thomas Cheung, chairman of the alumni association of the college, officiated at the ceremony and addressed the 465 graduates. Over 1,000 guests attended the function. Shaw College Shaw College turned out its second batch of 136 graduates this year. The graduation ceremony took place on the afternoon of 1st June, also at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. Officiating at the ceremony was Prof. D. C. Lau, senior college tutor, who, together with Prof. C. N. Chen, the college head, and other college fellows, also presented certificates of merit to prize winners. Chung Chi College Chung Chi College's 37th valedictory service took place on 2nd June in the college chapel. Dr. John Chen, president of Lingnan College, was theguest speaker. Immediately after the service a tree-planting ceremony was held by the graduates to express their thanks to the college. A tea reception for guests and parents was then organized at the college staff club and chapel lounge. The college produced 427 graduates this year. New Asia College The 40th farewell assembly in honour of the 1990-91 graduates ofNew Asia College was held on 9th June at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. Prof. Chia-wei Woo, vice-chancellor of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, was invited to address the graduates, and Mr. Lee Kam-chung, chairman of the college's alumni association, congratulated the 414 graduates on behalf of the association. Included in the day's programme were a tree-planting ceremony, the taking of group photos, and refreshments for both guests and students on the New Asia campus.
