CUHK Newsletter No.20 July 91 University to Accommodate 700 Disabled Persons The third International Abilympics 1991 will be held in Hong Kong this August, and the University will help accommodate some 700 disabled participants from different parts of the world. They will live in the University's guesthouses and student hostels in United College and Shaw College from 8th to 16th August. As these participants have different handicaps such as blindness and deafness, and some are wheelchair-bound, members of the University are requested to offer help whenever necessary to make their stay on campus more congenial. Motorists should also pay special attention when driving on campus roads during that period. New Publications of the University Press The following books will be sold at a 20 per cent discount to staff members at the University Bookshop, John Fulton Centre: • China and Europe: Images and Influences in Sixteenth to Eighteenth Centuries (in English) edited by Thomas H. Lui and Chang Hsin, xxxii + 240 pp., (paperback, HK$48). Services to the Community and International Organizations • Prof. Chen Char-nie, professor of psychiatry and head of Shaw College, has been appointed a member of the Board of Review 一 Long Term Prison Sentences by HE the Governor for three years from 1st May 1991. • Mrs. Grace Chow, director of student affairs, has been appointed a member of the Joint Committee on Student Finance (JCSF) by HE the Governor for one year from 1st May 1991. Mrs. Chow has also been elected chairman of the Review Committee of the JCSF. • Prof. P. C. Leung, professor of orthopaedics and traumatology, has been reappointed by His Honour the Deputy to the Governor as an appointed member of the Urban Council from 1st June 1991 to 31st March 1995. • Dr. Richard M. W. Ho, lecturer in Chinese language and literature, and Dr. Fanny M. C. Cheung, senior lecturer in psychology, have been appointed by HE the Governor as appointedmembers of the Regional Council from 1st June 1991 to 31st March 1995. • Prof. T. B. Lin, head of New Asia College and professor of economics, has been invited by Lingnan College to serve as chairman of the advisory board of its Department of Social Sciences for two years from 1st September 1991. • Dr. Eva Hung, director of Research Centre for Translation, has been appointed a member of the Translation Course Advisory Committee, Baptist College, from 1st March 1991 to 31st August 1993. • Prof. Patrick C. P. Ho, professor of surgery, has been re-elected vice-president of the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology from 1991 to 1993. • Dr. Chan Wing Wah, lecturer in music, conducted the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts Symphony Orchestra to present four new compositions by students of the academy on 22nd May 1991. Dr. Chan has also been re-elected vice-chairman of the Hong Kong Composers’ Guild from June 1991 to May 1993.
