No.40 March 1993 CUHK Newsletter COLLEGE Life 'To Know the Basic Law' United College Annual Workshop 12th February United College held its annual workshop on the Basic Law last month at its lecture theatre C1. Over 130 participants discussed the spirit and the interpretation of the Basic Law, and the importance of increasing the understanding of the Basic Law among students and other members of the public Panel speakers included the Hon. Szeto Wah, legislative councillor, Mr. Y. S. Tsang, chairman of the Democratic Alliance for Betterment of Hong Kong, and Prof. Byron Weng, professor of government and public administration. Mr. Jeremiah Wong, college dean of students, served as moderator of the discussion. 'The World in Mathematics' Chung Chi College Annual Education Conference 13th February With mathematics as its central theme, Chung Chi College's education conference 1992-93 covered five major discussion topics, namely 'The World in Mathematics', 'Mathematics through Physics', 'Mathematics and Statistics', 'From Transfinite Set Theory to the Physical World 一 on the Foundations of Mathematical Truth', and 'Can One Hear the Shape of a Drum ?'. Speakers included Prof. Man-Duen Choi, Siu-lien Ling Wong Visiting Fellow 1992-93 from the University of Toronto; Dr. Lai Hon Ming of the Department of Physics; Dr. Ng Kai Wang of the Department of Statistics, University of Hong Kong; Dr. Lee Tien Ming of the Department of Philosophy; and Prof. Cheng Shiu Yuen of the Department of Mathematics. The function was attended by more than 100 staff and students. Staff Tennis Tournament Shaw College Captures College Cup 1992-93 The Staff Tennis Tournament boasts a history of 10 years and has been warmly supported by tennis players on the campus. The trophy for this inter-collegiate tournament was donated by three college heads 10 years ago and the rules for competition set up by Dr. K. K. Mark, founder of the tournament. This year matches were arranged in December 1992 and January 1993 and the Shaw College team has come up with the best results, defeating all three other colleges and achieving an overall result of 18 wins and nine losses in the 27 games played. Players on the Shaw College team were Dr. Michael Tam, Prof. Joseph Lee, Prof. Yeung Yue Man, Mr. Lau Wing Chung, Mr. Tam Yuk Ho, Mr. Lee Wing Kei, Dr. Roy Chan, and Dr. Louie Lobo. 5
