No.40 March 1993 CUHK Newsletter Announcements Professorial Inaugural Lecture Prof. Vincent Lum, professor of systems engineering, will deliver his inaugural lecture entitled ' An Evolution of Data and Information Management' on 19th March at 5.00 p.m. in lecture theatre L1, Science Centre. Professor of Economics Visits United College Prof. Richard Portes, professor of economics at Birkbeck College, University of London, and director of the Centre for Economic Policy Research in London, w i ll visit United College from 27th March to 12th April as the college's second Distinguished Visiting Scholar 1992-93. Prof. Portes will give two open lectures on economics. For details please call 6097581. Better Benefits for Terms C Staff The University has formalized existing terminal gratuity arrangements for Terms of Service C staff as the Terms of Service C Staff Terminal Gratuity Scheme. The scheme, which came into effect on 1st March 1993, aims at bringing existing arrangements into line with the Occupational Retirement Schemes Ordinance and providing improved benefits to terms C appointees. Members of the scheme are not required to make any contribution. Under the scheme, eligible staff members shall continue to receive benefits on retirement, invalidity, death in employment, or redundancy due to University reorganization. In the event of cessation of employment, staff members under the scheme may now enjoy a leave-service benefit if they have served the University for 10 years or more. Another merit of the scheme is that benefits received by staff members under the scheme are exempt from Hong Kong salaries tax or estate duty. Medical Benefits for Retired Staff In accordance with a recent decision of the University Council, out-patient medical care as well as dental and prosthodontic services at prescribed charges provided at the University Health Centre w i ll now be extended to the following persons: (a) Full-time appointees who retired after having served the University for not less than 10 years, and their spouse and dependent children; and (b) Spouse and dependent children of full-time appointees who died in service after having served the University for not less than 10 years. Entitlement to such benefits w i ll however cease if the spouse remarries or the children cease to be dependents under relevant University regulations. Eligible persons may register with the University Health Centre for admission to this medical/dental service scheme. Campus Network Applications Fair in April A Campus Network Applications Fair will be held by the Computer Services Centre (CSC) at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall on 14th April from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. Booths will be set up in the fair to demonstrate the various applications available on the Campus Backbone Network: campus network architecture, campus-wide information system, campus-wide electronic mail system, Internet applications, electronic references, X-Window applications, library catalogues, multimedia applications, PC local area network, office automation, security issues on network, and 'The Future CUHK '. Mini-seminars on specific topics and video shows w i ll also be conducted. A Public Domain and Question-and- Answer counter w i ll be set up to sprve visitors. A ll are welcome. Paintings by Chang Dai-chien on Exhibition Over 100 paintings by Chang Dai-chien (1899-1983) will be displayed in the exhibition 'The Mei Yun Tang Collection of Paintings by Chang Dai-chien', to be held at the Art Gallery from 17th April to 23rd May 1993. Hailed as the most versatile master of modem Chinese painting, Chang Dai-chien was renowned for his mastery of all genres and styles of traditional painting. Since 1949 he had travelled and exhibited worldwide. The splashed-ink and splashed-colour techniques that he evolved during that period transcended tradition to make him an internationally acclaimed innovator of Chinese painting. The Mei Yun Tang collection represents almost half a century's collecting activities of two of the master's closest friends, Mr. and Mrs. Kao Ling-mei. It includes his works executed between 1929 and 1968, many of which are masterpieces demonstrating Chang Da i - c h i en 's grand synthesis of traditional styles and their transformation by an innovative modem master. Mrs. Chang Dai-chien w i ll officiate at the opening ceremony of the exhibition at 4.30 p.m. on 16th April. A ll are welcome. Come Join the Staff Football Club The CU Staff Football Club, an interest group affiliated to CUTA, CUSA and CUESU, now invites interested members of the staff to enrol as members and to join their Friday practice sessions to be held in the University Football Field from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on the following dates: 12th and 26th March 1993 16th and 30th April 1993 Please direct all enquiries to Mr. Danny Cheng (ext. 7817). Obituary Mr. Cheung Man-kwong, gardener at the Buildings Office, passed away on 4th February 1993. Mr. Cheung first joined the University in July 1982. 9
