No.46 September 1993 CUHK Newsletter ANNOUNCEMENTS The 46th Congregation and Special Arrangements on the Congregation Day The 46th congregation for the conferment of honorary degrees and for the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the University will be held on Thursday, 14th October at 3.00 p.m. in the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. The Rt. Hon. Christopher Patten, Governor of Hong Kong and Chancellor of the University, will officiate at the ceremony, which will be followed by a reception at the University Mall. This year six distinguished persons will be awarded honorary degrees. They are Mr. Yo-yo Ma, Mr. Zao Wou-ki, the Rev. Shih Cheng-yen, Dr. Cheng Yu-tung, Dr. Lee-Shau-Kee and Mr. Thomas H. C. Cheung. Citations will be written and delivered by the public orator, Mr. T. L. Tsim, director of The Chinese University Press. Dr. C. P. Kwong, senior lecturer in information engineering, will be the mace-bearer. Mr. Thomas H. C. Cheung will address the congregation on behalf of the honorary graduates. Members of the staff are reminded that classes will not be suspended on the congregation day on 14th October. It will be left to the discretion of individual teachers who have classes on that day to make alternative arrangements if they wish to attend the congregation. Robing Room for Procession Members Staff members joining the official procession should assemble by 2.30 p.m. on the ground floor of the Y. C. Liang Hall, which will serve as the robing room. Marshalling of the procession will begin at 2.40 p.m. on the Central Avenue outside the Y. C. Liang Hall. Traffic Arrangements Traffic on the Central Avenue will be made one-way only (west-bound) from 1.30 p.m. on the congregation day, leaving one lane of the avenue for parking. Appropriate traffic signs will be put up and campus guards will be on hand to assist motorists. BFC Staff & Student Canteens Temporarily Closed In case of rain, the tea reception will be held at the canteens in the Benjamin Franklin Centre. The Staff Dining Room will therefore be closed all day on 14th October and the Student Canteen will be closed from 12.00 noon. Professorial Appointments Professor of Surgery (Otorhinolaryngology) Dr. C. A. Van Hasselt has been appointed professor of surgery (otorhinolaryngology) from 1st July 1993. After graduating from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa with M.B. Ch.B. degrees in 1976, Prof. Van Hasselt worked for nine years in major teaching hospitals of the Johannesburg Group of Hospitals, gaining comprehensive exposure to and experience in ear, nose and throat surgery. During the same period he acquired additional qualifications, which include a diploma in aviation medicine in 1978, a diploma in underwater medicine in 1982, and the degree of Master of Medicine in 1987 awarded by the University of the Witwatersrand. He is also a fellow of the Chemical Society in South Africa. Prof. Van Hasselt joined The Chinese University as lecturer in surgery in 1985 and was promoted to senior lecturer in 1988. Professor of Orthopaedics and Traumatology Mr. Chan Kai-ming has been appointed professor of orthopaedics and traumatology from 1st August 1993. Prof. Chan graduated with MB BS degrees from the University of Hong Kong in 1975. After a year of internship, he began his specialization in orthopaedic surgery at Princess Margaret Hospital and worked there until 1981, when he left for the UK to undertake further research in orthopaedics. He obtained his M.Ch.(Orth) degree from the University of Liverpool in 1982. Prof. Chan joined The Chinese University as lecturer in orthopaedics and traumatology in 1983, was promoted to senior lecturer in 1984 and reader in 1989. He is also a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. Prof. Chan is married, with two sons. Professor of Surgery Mr. Joseph W. Y. Lau has been appointed professor of surgery from 1st August 1993. 9
