CUHK Newsletter No.46 September 1993 Prof. Lau studied medicine at the University of Hong Kong and obtained his MB BS degrees in 1972. He then served in the surgical units of Queen Mary Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital for close to 16 years, and became consultant surgeon at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in 1988. He joined The Chinese University as senior lecturer in surgery in 1989, and was promoted to reader in 1992. Prof. Lau holds offices in many professional societies, and is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, and the International College of Anaesthetists. Prof. Lau is married, with two children. Professor of Mathematics Prof. S. Y. Cheng has been appointed as professor of mathematics from 15th August 1993. Prof. Cheng graduated from this university with a B.Sc. degree in 1970. He then pursued doctoral studies at the University of California at Berkeley and obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1974. After graduation, Prof. Cheng worked as instructor for two years at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Science, New York University, before joining Princeton University as assistant professor of mathematics. He returned to the University of California at Berkeley in 1980 to serve as associate professor of mathematics, and was promoted to professor rank in 1981. Last year he accepted an invitation to serve as visiting professor at The Chinese University. His major research interests are differential goemetry and partial differential equation. Annual Staff Review Applications/nominations are invited from all full-time teaching and non-teaching staff on Terms of Service (A) and instructors, in respect of staff development grants, retirement/extension of service and promotion, soon to be considered in the coming staff review exercise for the academic year 1994-95.
