2 No. 115 4th November 1997 CUHK Newsletter Jo i nt Lab t o Boost Mater ials Technology Research A Joint Laboratory on Advanced Materials was established f o l l ow i ng the signing o f an agreement on 24th September between the Un i v e r s i t y 's Materials Technology Research Centre and the Ion Beam Laboratory of the Shanghai Institute o f Metallurgy, Chinese Academy o f Sciences. The Shanghai Institute o f Metallurgy was represented by Profs Zou Shichang and Yu Yuehui while the Materials Technology Research Centre was represented by Profs Ian Wilson and S. P. Wong. Collaboration between the institutions was well under way before this official agreement w i th many j o i nt scientific papers published or accepted for publication. The j o i nt laboratory w i ll contribute to the development of materials technology research in Hong Kong and increase academic exchange between the institutions. Dress Down for Charity Members of the Department of Nursing dressed casual on 9th October to raise HK$2,550 in support of the Community Chest. 48th Anniversary ofNew Asia College 1997 marks the 48th anniversary of the f ound i ng o f New Asia College. In celebration, various activities were organized between mid- to late September. These included the Round-the-Campus Run, college head trophy competitions between staff and students, and a scholarship presentation ceremony. The traditional Feast for Thousands, held on 30th September, was attended by over 1,500 staff and students. It was followed by a Carnival Nite held inside the New Asia Gymnasium. Service to the Community andInternationalOrganizations • Prof. P.C. Ching, professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering, has been appointed as a member of the Editorial Board and Accreditation Board of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers for the year 1997-98. • Dr. John Tse, veterinary technologist of the Animal House, has been appointed as a member of the Veterinary Surgeons Board for one year from 15th September 1997. • Dr. Joe Thomas, project coordinator of the Centre for Clinical Trials and Epidemiological Research, has been elected to the Board of Directors of AIDS Concern for the year 1997-98. • Prof. Ma Lai-chong, associate professor in the Department of Social Work, has been appointed as a faculty member of the Family Studies of Hong Kong, the local branch of the Family Studies of New York, from August 1997. • Prof. Anthony Yim, associate professor in the Department of Surgery, has been appointed as a member of the editorial board of CHEST, a cardiopulmonary and critical care journal, for five years from July 1998. ReferenceMaterials on Urban Housing Developmentin China (US$20) The document is a product of the ongoing housing research projects at the Department of Architecture. It contains 600 reference entries organized into three parts —English references, Chinese references, and an index containing all the English and Chinese materials in alphabetical order by author's name. For the convenience of the user, the first two parts are cross-referenced under major topics on housing development. These topics include housing policy, standards, planning, design, technology, and case studies. Urban Housing in China: An Introductory Studyof 'Year 2000 Urban and Rural Xiaokang Housing Scientific and Technological Industrial Project' (US$30, ISBN 962-8272-10-1 ) The 'Year 2000 Urban and Rural Xiaokang Housing Scientific and Technological Industrial Project' was launched in September 1994. This is a Chinese central government housing programme, planned and carried out by the State Commission of Science and Technology (SCST) and the Ministry of Construction (MOC) in association with six other ministries. Designated as one of the most important scientific and technological projects in the Chinese National N i n th Five-year Plan, the overall goal o f this programme is to quicken the process of modernization, renovation and restructuring of the housing industry in China. This book gives an overview of this housing programme with emphasis on urban housing development.. Housing in theSpecialEconomic Zones: A Preliminary StudyofHousing Provision and Conditions in Shenzhen (US$30, ISBN 962-8272-20-9) This book is based on a study that investigates the quality o f residential settlements in the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. These settlements, which are typically mass housing estates, are being studied in order to gain a background understanding for improving future housing planning and design. The study begins w i th background research on housing development in Shenzhen. It then documents the morphology of selected housing estates and carries out POE case studies. This includes the measurement o f phys i cal conditions and observations o f the interrelationships of settlement amenities, building facilities, and flat layouts. Through this approach, the effectiveness of an estate's physical configuration in supporting the physical, social, and cultural living activities of residents is assessed.
