Hau Kit-tai, professor in the Department of Educational Psychology, has been appointed by the Secretary for Health and Welfar e a s a member o f th e Hon g Kon g Counci l o n Smoking and Health from 1s t October 1997 . • Prof . Edit h Lau , associat e professo r i n th e Departmen t o f Community an d Famil y Medicine , ha s bee n appointed b y the Secretar y fo r Healt h an d Welfar e a s a member o f th e Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health and chair of its Research Subcommittee from 1s t October 1997 . • Prof . Jac k C.Y . Cheng , professo r i n th e Departmen t o f Orthopaedics an d Traumatology , ha s bee n appointe d a s a member o f th e Internationa l Affair s Committe e o f th e Scoliosis Research Society for a year from 28th October 1997. He ha s als o bee n appointe d professiona l advise r o f th e Community Rehabilitatio n Networ k o f th e Hon g Kon g Society fo r Rehabilitation from 199 7 to 1999 . • Prof . Chan Wing-wah, professor in the Department of Music, has been elected a member of the executive committee of the UNESCO Internationa l Societ y fo r Contemporar y Musi c from 199 7 to 1999 . Prof. Chan has also been re-elected to the board of directors of the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong Ltd. from 199 7 to 2000. • Prof . Yum Tak-shing, professor of information engineering, has been appointed by Hong Kong Baptist University as the external examine r fo r Applie d Computin g Major , a BSc (Hons) Combined Sciences course, for three years until 31st August 2000. • Prof . X u Yangsheng , professo r i n th e Departmen t o f Mechanical and Automation Engineering, has been appointed as chief technical advise r o f the National Telescienc e an d Space Robotics Programme by the National High-Technology Programme of the State Council of The People's Republic of China. • Prof . C.S . Cockram , professo r o f medicine, has bee n appointed to the board of management of the Internationa l Diabetes Federatio n from 199 7 t o 2000 . He has also been appointed a s chai r o f th e Educatio n Foundatio n o f th e International Diabetes Federation from 1997 to 2000, editor- in-chief o f Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice, an d temporary adviser to the World Health Organization to attend a working grou p o n integrate d preventio n an d contro l o f cardiovascular disease s an d diabete s i n Kual a Lumpu r i n November 1997 . • Prof . Simon S.M. Ho, professor in the School of Accountancy, was elected vice-president o f the International Associatio n for Accounting Education and Research (IAAER) fo r three years a t the 8t h IAAE R Worl d Congres s i n Pari s o n 23r d October 1997 . • Prof . Le e Sing , associat e professo r i n th e Departmen t o f Psychiatry, has been appointed a member of the International Editorial Advisory Boar d of Anthropology and Medicine i n the United Kingdom from January 1997, as well as a member of the editorial committee of the U.S. Chinese Psychosomatic Medicine Journal from Januar y 199 7 to December 1998 .
