Yi p Research Grants Council Calls fo rApplication • Competitive Research Grants 1999-2000 Applications are invited from interested parties to compete for allocation from the 1999-2000 Earmarked Research Grant from the RGC. All full-time academic staff o f grades A-M, o r visiting o r contract staff within those grades whose contract covers a t least the first year of the project are eligible t o apply. Each applicant may submit only one application as principal investigator. Application for ethics/safety approval must b e submitted directly and separately t o th e approval authorities concerned. And as with last year, the principal investigators may submit proposals for external review. Guidelines and application forms are available from th e Research an d Technology Administration Office (RTAO) (Ext. 8885 ), the respective panel secretaries, and http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/rtao/rgc/htm. The internal deadlines for the different panels are as follows: Arts and Languages 9th September 1998 Biological Science 21 st September 1998 Business Administration 24th August 1998 Engineering 19th September 1998 Medicine 12th September 1998 Physical Science 14th September 1998 Social Science and Education 21st September 1998 • Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) Scheme Applications are also invited for the RGC's CRC scheme. Applicants should submit a proposal i n the prescribed format and supply a one-page summary highlighting the objective of the proposed centre and why i t should be supported by the RGC. One condition of grant is that there should be at least one industrial/ business partner who has pledged t o contribute no less than 20 per cent of the centre's direct costs. They are: Development o f an Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) Using a Novel Monoclinal Antibody Against 6-Hydroxycortisol t o Detect Enzyme Induction in Man by Prof. John H.K. Yeung of the Department of Pharmacology Productivity Changes an dDeindustrialization i n Hong Kong — a n Empirical Analysis by Prof. Kai-sun Kwong and Prof. T.B. Lin (retired) of the Department o f Economics • RGC Researc h Grant s fo r1998-9 9 A total o f 119 research proposals submitted b y academic and research staff of the University have been awarded earmarked grants totalling HK$71,769,000 from the Research Grants Council (RGC) this year. The University also received a direct allocation o f $17.9 million t o finance small projects. For 1998-99, the government has made available $428 million to eight UGC- funded tertiary institutions for research purposes: $75 million for direct allocation to the institutions t o finance small projects; $323 million for selected research proposals submitted by academic and research personnel in the institutions; the rest has been set aside t o support new initiatives aimed a t encouraging group research and strengthening the research base of these institutions. The 119 CUHK projects selected for support fall into four subject disciplines: biology and medicine (38); engineering (30); physical sciences (21); and the humanities, social sciences and business studies (30).
