Mrs. Mary Yao ( r i g h t ) , Information Technology Services Centre Portrait of the Pro-Vice- Chancellor as a Young Man Prof. Liu Pak-wai, Department of Economics, in 1978 My Reflections on Teaching at The Chinese University Chen Jow Jin, English Language Teaching Unit It is a quarter of a century since I became a member of the teaching staff of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Teaching has become my vocation and I agree w i th George Bernard Shaw that, ' He who can does, he who cannot teaches.' I consider myself very fortunate to have taught in the English Language Teaching Unit which was set up in 1984 with Prof. Francis Johnson as its first director, and over the years, having worked under several local heads, I find that the occasional presence of a renowned language director has given the unit status and professionalism. The founding fathers of The Chinese University had foresight when they made the University bilingual but u n f o r t u n a t e ly the c ompu l s o ry Chinese and Eng l i sh Language courses of six credit units were abolished when the University changed its four-year curriculum into a three- year degree programme. Indeed teaching English to students has become a more challenging task in the new environment of this bilingual university. With the growing affluence of Hong Kong society, notwithstanding the present economic downturn, students nowadays seem to be less academically inclined and more practical than ever before. Thus I feel that w i th my background in English literature, I have made some contribution to English teaching here where I am able to make some students, if not all, learn English not just for functional purposes but also for effective communication. Working as a coordinator and tutor in the Writing Centre in the past five years has given me a great opportunity to work w i th students on a one-to-one basis and to help them improve their English writing. It gives me immense joy when I see that individual attention and personal interaction can make a change in the students' attitude towards learning English. They make sincere efforts to think and write in English and to express themselves in a clear and coherent manner. If Samuel Johnson was correct when he said that 'Language is the dress of thought', then my students were impeccably attired. Now the territory-wide introduction of quality control in universities and the emphasis placed on students' evaluation of their teachers seem to have led to 'grade inflation'. Students need to learn to respect teachers and abide by Confucian values. Also, they need to be properly taught in the western college tradition of honour, fairness, and individual responsibility. There is need for a holistic approach towards teachers and course evaluation and a need for balance between teaching and research. I have enjoyed teaching the young adults in this university and I feel happy and proud when I succeed in awakening their interest in learning not only the English language but also English literature and culture as well. I would like to be thought of as having been more than a language teacher and f u l f i l l i ng the aim of my final quotation wo u ld be a meaningful achievement: 'The whole art of teaching is only the art of awakening the natural curiosity of young minds for the purpose of satisfying it afterwards' — Anatole France.
