New Consu l t i ng Un i t Exami nes Human Resource Pract i ces A n open house of the Assessment and Training Centre was held on 16th November in Lecture Theatre 2 of the Esther Lee Building. Mr. Philco N.K. Wong, executive director of Gammon Skanska Ltd. and Dr. Saimond Ip, executive director of Hong Kong Pearl River Delta, were present to give talks on the topic 'New Challenges to Human Resource Practices Across Industries'. The Assessment and Training Centre, jointly established by the Faculty of Business Admi n i s t ra t i on and the Department of Psychology in 2001, is a consulting institute specializing in business psychology and management. It assists organizations in enhancing effectiveness and gaining competitive advantage through the development of human resource systems, management practices, and employee competencies. Prof. Fanny Cheung, director of the centre (left 2), introducing guests to a personality assessment tool that has been researched and applied to organizations United Board Visits Chung Chi After 50 Years T r us t ees of the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia visited Chung Chi College on 19th November. It was the first official visit of the trustees and the board's homecoming after 50 years. The delegation was invited to the Chung Chi Chapel where the emblems of all 13 Christian colleges and universities formed by the United Board in mainland China were displayed, the only place in the world where one could see them all. The delegation also met Prof. Ambrose King, vice-chancellor of the University, at a dinner reception. The US-based United Board has been providing support for Christian colleges in China since it was formed in 1922. The colleges and universities in China that were sponsored by the board included Lingnan University in Guangzhou whose alumni formed Chung Chi College in 1951. The college's expansion in the early years was also made possible with financial support from North America through the United Board and the trustees of Lingnan University. Prof. Ambrose King and Dr. Timothy Light of the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia Graduation Ceremony for Postgraduate Diplomas in Community & Family Medicine The School of Public Health held a diploma presentation ceremony at Kai Chong Tong on 16th November. A total of 137 students received their diplomas on that day. The ceremony began with a welcome speech by Prof. Jean Woo, director of the School of Public Health and chair of the Department of Community and Family Medicine. Prof. Tony Chung, associate dean of the Faculty of Medicine, officiated at the ceremony and Dr. Vivian Wong, director of Professional Services and Medical Development at the Hospital Authority, was the guest of honour and speaker. United Wins Andrew Parkin Drama Cup U nited College clinched this year's Andrew Parkin Drama Cup with Red Side Story, their own adaptation of West Side Story while Chung Chi College won the Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Playwright Awards with Adam and Eve. The competition took place on 30th October at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. The judges were Mr. Hardy Tsoi, Prof. Gilbert Fong, and Dr. Glenn Shive. 宣 布 事 項 ANNOUNCEMENTS 新設課程 Senate Approves New Programmes of Study 大學教務會十月九日通過開設下列新課程: •日本硏究哲學碩士課程（二零零三至二零零四年度起） (以下課程由校外進修學院開設） •企業傳訊文憑課程(二零零三年一月起） •紀律部隊專業培訓及表達技巧文憑課程(二零零二年十一月起） •文化旅遊證書課程(二零零二年十二月起） •專業導師證書課程(二零零二年十一月起） •廣域網路發展證書課程(二零零二年十二月起） The following programmes have been approved for introduction by the Senate at its meeting on 9th October 2002: • Master of Philosophy Programme in Japanese Studies in 2003-4 By the School of Continuing Studies: • Diploma Programme in Corporate Communication in January 2003 • Diploma Programme in Professional Training and Presentation Skills for Disciplinary Forces in November 2002 • Certificate Programme in Cultural Tourism in December 2002 • Certificate Programme for Professional Trainers in November 2002 • Certificate Programme in Wide Area Network Development in December 2002 香港中文大學評議會易名 香港中文大學評議會上月十六日舉行特別會員大會，正式通過將該會中文名稱 改為「香港中文大學校友評議會」，而英文名稱則不變。 「香港中文大學評議會」乃根據《香港中文大學條例》成立的法定組織。其成員包 括中大學位畢業生，而中大成立前原成員書院畢業生及中大硏究院文憑持有人亦可 登記加入。 新名稱既保留評議會字義，亦清楚界定為一個中大校友的組織，可避免名稱上 引致的誤導，並能增加中大校友對評議會的歸屬感和認受性，有助該會未來發展。 有關更改名稱建議將呈大學校董會批准。大學將循正常程序，提請立法會通過 相應修改《香港中文大學條例》內有關條文。 資訊科技概論證書課程 Certificate Course in Information Technology Essentials 為提高校內行政及支援人員的資訊科技水平，資訊科技服務處將於明年一月舉 辦「資訊科技概論證書課程」。課程包括六個單元：互聯網應用、網上教學、智能卡 應用、企業資訊技術、文件管理及資訊保安，由資訊科技服務處資深電算師講授， 輔以網上學習形式進行，歡迎各級行政及支援人員參加，學費五百元。學員修畢課 程並考試及格，可獲簽發有效期兩年的證書，並等同通過助理 主任/執行助理晉升評核中的資訊科技水平測試。有關課程詳 情及報名辦法，請參閱網 頁 http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/itsc/training/。 The Information Technology Services Centre (ITSC) is going to conduct the 'Certificate Course in Information Technology Essentials' for Univesity staff in January 2003. The course is part of a training initiative to help develop the IT competence of administrative and supporting staff. It is composed of six modules: (a) Internet and its applications, (b) Web-based teaching, (c) smart card and its applications, (d) enterprise computing, (e) document management, and (f) information security. It w i l l be taught by experienced computer officers of the ITSC with web-based tutorials. Application is open to all administrative and support staff on a first come, first served basis. The co urse fee is $500. Participants will be awarded a certificate if they pass the assessment examination after the completion of the course. The certificate will be valid for two years and recognized by the University as equivalent to passing the IT test for EO/EA promotion assessment.
