New Asia Students Learn About Amer i can Social Welfare i n Exchange w i t h Yale E ight New Asia students visited Yale University from 25th January to 7th February under the New Asia- Yale University Student Exchange Programme. The theme for this year's exchange was 'Social Welfare'. For two weeks, the students, led by Ms. Julia Travers, director of the Yale-China Association (Hong Kong Office), explored social welfare issues in the US. They also presented reports on youth unemployment, the Hong Kong Jockey Club, mainland immigrants, and Hong Kong's housing policy at a symposium held at Yale University. The delegates met with government officials and student groups, v i s i t ed an A I DS Home, and participated in voluntary services during their trip. Their accommodation was provided by local host families. The Yale students w i l l pay a return visit to New Asia College from 8th to 22nd March. The programme has been jointly organized by the two institutions since 1993. CUHK Receives 30 Sets of Embedded Development Systems to Boost Research G roup Sense PDA Ltd. and Intel Semiconductor Ltd. have donated 30 sets o f tailor-made SA1110 Development Systems to the University's Embedded System Laboratory for research and development purposes. These systems, unique in Hong Kong, are equipped with the latest StrongArm embedded processors and support-easy connections to external hardware devices. The Depa r tment o f Compu t er Science and Engineering wo u ld add colour L CD displays and Bluetooth communication devices to the systems. With such acquisitions, the Embedded System Laboratory w i ll be able to work more closely with leading educational and industrial institutions on research and development projects. An embedded system is any kind of device that includes a processor but is not intended to be a general- purpose computer. The use of such systems in control applications has a long history, and the advancement of system-on-chip technology has brought the applications o f embedded systems to a new level, namely, the development of networked mobile devices. It is now possible to embed very small and power-efficient processors into wearable devices like personal digital assistants, global positioning systems, 3-G phones, biometrics sensors, and other smart devices. Health Webs i te and New Hea l th L o go A health website was launched and prizes for a health- related slogan design competition awarded at a ceremony coorganized by the Steering Committee on Health Promotion and the University Health Service at the University Health Centre on 12th February. T he w e b s i t e ( h t t p : / / w w w . c u h k . e d u . h k/ healthpromotion/) was officially launched by Prof. Ambrose King, vice-chancellor of the University. The website is to publicize upcoming health promotion activities on campus to students and staff. It also disseminates useful information on topical health issues to members of the University community. Prof. Ambrose K i ng, Prof. P.W. L i u, pro-vice- chancellor, and Prof. Lee Shiu-hung, chairman of the Steering Committee on Health Promotion, also presented prizes to winners of the slogan design competition. The winning designs w i ll be adopted as the committee's logo and slogan. The following courses have been scheduled as follows: Course titles (1) Beginner's course in Putonghua for non-Chinese speakers. (2) Beginner's course in Cantonese for non-Chinese speakers. (3) Beginner's course in Putonghua for speakers of other Chinese dialects. (4) Beginner's course in Cantonese for speakers of other Chinese dialects. Duration & time Class A: 1st April to 12th June 2003; 40 sessions Every Tuesday and Thursday (6.30 p.m. to 8.20 p.m.) Class B: 2nd April to 18th June 2003; 40 sessions Every Wednesday (6.30 p.m. to 8.20 p.m.) and Saturday (10.30 a.m. to 12.20 p.m.) Venue Hui Yeung Shing Building, Chung Chi College The size of each class is limited to 10 students. The minimum number of students to form a class is six. Enrolment is on a first-come-first-served basis. Basic tuition fee for each course is HK$6,000. The University w i ll subsidize 40 per cent of the tuition fee for all full-time academic and administrative staff, as well as their spouses, who are expected to be with the University for at least two years, and who are not receiving a language study subsidy from any other source.
