To b e honest , I d o n ' t reall y k n o w th e a n swe r t o th e abov e t w o questions . I s u p p o se s t u d e n t s ar e e n g a g e d i n l e a r n i n g a c t i v i t i e s i n t h e i r subjec t areas . Nevertheless, i t i s h a r d t o measur e h o w m u c h t h e y ca n benefi t f r o m th e tertiar y curricula prepare d b y professor s o r cours e planner s w h o , unfortunately , ma y n o t k n o w exactl y w h a t th e learner s w a n t o r need . T h e y ar e p r i m a r i l y base d o n thei r previous experienc e w h e n choosin g th e topic s a n d leve l fo r th e specifi c group s o f learners entruste d t o them . O f course , there ar e lots o f case s in w h i ch m i sma t c h o f needs, content a n d leve l of d i f f i c u l t y occur . N o w o n d e r th e w o r d ' u n i v e r s i t y ' ha s b e e n t r a n s l a t e d b y a Taiwanese w r i t e r a s 'letting y ou squande r thre e years' ( 由你廢三年) . Some students , especially thos e autonomous students , benefit more f r om their universit y education . F r o m 1s t September 200 5 o nwa r d s, th e I n d e p e n d e n t L e a r n i n g Centr e (ILC) , w h i c h p r o v i d e s resource s o n language l e a r n i n g a n d r u n s r e g u l a r w o r k s h o p s o n Cantonese , p u t o n g h u a a n d English, i s relocate d t o 1/F , Wu C h u n g Mu l t i me d i a Library . Joseph Lau, director of Centre for Epidemiology an d Biostatistics, has been re-appointed by th e Secretar y fo r Health , Welfare an d Food as a member o f the Gran t Review Board , th e scientific advise r t o the Researc h Council o f the Health, Welfar e an d Food Bureau, fo r tw o years from 1s t October 2005 . • Prof . Ng Pa k Cheung, professor i n the Department o f Paediatrics, ha s been appointed by th e Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food as a member of the Supplementary Medical Professions Council fo r three years from 1s t October 2005 . • Prof . Tang Kwong Leung, professor of social work, has been re-appointed by the Secretary fo r Health, Welfare an d Food as a member o f the Advisory Committe e o n Social Work Trainin g and Manpower Training for two years from 1s t November 2005 . • Prof . Le e Kwing Chi n Kenneth, professor i n the Schoo l of Pharmacy, has been appointed b y the Secretar y fo r Health, Welfare an d Food as a member o f the Chinese Medicines Boar d fo r three years from 13t h September 2005 . • Prof . Cheun g Mui Chin g Fanny , professor o f psychology, ha s been appointed b y th e Chie f Justice a s a member o f th e Barrister s Disciplinar y Tribuna l Pane l fo r fiv e year s fro m 1 st September 2005 . • Prof . Clive Stewar t Cockram, professor of medicine, has been re-nominated by the Universit y to serve as a member of the Education and Accreditation Committee o f the Medical Council o f Hong Kong fo r another three years from 12t h February 2006 . • Prof . Chan Hsiao Chang, professor in the Department of Physiology, has been appointed as an adjunct professor of Henan University fro m 6t h June 2004. • Prof . Cha n Wing-wah, professor o f music, was commissioned by the Macau Orchestra of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macau SAR to compose for its Contemporary Chines e Music Series . The resulting piece Reflections of Macau wa s premiered by the orchestra in Macau Cathedra l on 15t h July 2005 . Prof . Cha n was als o invite d b y th e Ministr y o f Culture , China , an d the Department o f Culture, Sichua n Province, to a cultural stud y tou r i n Chengd u and Jiuzaiko u from 21st to 26th August 2005 . Fann y Cheun g receive d th e 200 5 Distinguishe d Psychologis t Awar d fo r significan t contributions t o global psychology fro m the APA Division o f International Psychology . • Prof . Michael H . Bond and Ms. Sylvi a Xiaohua Chen , Ph.D. studen t i n psychology, receive d the American Psychologica l Association Divisio n 5 2 (International Psychology ) Awards fo r Student Internationa l Research 2005. Their two papers received the Award of Excellence i n the categories o f Internationa l Comparativ e Stud y an d Descriptive Researc h i n a Developin g Country.
