Moot Team Crowned Champion at International Moot Competition

A team of students from the Faculty of Law recently won the championship of the 17th Willem C. Vis East International Commercial Arbitration Moot.

Virtually held from 22 to 29 March, the Vis East Moot attracted a total of 71 universities of the crème de la crème across the globe, including Harvard University, University College London and Tsinghua University. With teams coming from 21 jurisdictions in Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America, the CUHK Moot Team prevailed against the University of Sao Paulo Largo San Francisco from Brazil in the final round and eventually reaped the Vis East Moot champion. Fan Yin Cheung Kasper, a member of the Moot Team, received an Honourable Mention for his advocacy.

Prof. Lutz-Christian Wolff, Dean of the Faculty of Law, acclaimed the tremendous efforts and high resilience of the Moot Team: ‘We are very proud of this wonderful success. It shows the high legal competence of our law students as well as their adaptability to new situations, as the change to an online competition was rather sudden and without much time to prepare.’

Being the coach of the Moot Team, Prof. Peter Rhodes from the Faculty of Law was also jubilant of the great accomplishment of the students. He chalked up the latest win to the team’s perseverance and eagerness to learn: ‘As the University switched to online teaching because of COVID-19 during the preparation period, the team had to practise online rather than meeting face-to-face. The team overcame this new challenge, making the achievement even more remarkable.’
