New Normal for Congregation

Over 530 doctoral degrees conferred online

The University held its 89th Congregation for the Conferment of Honorary and Doctoral Degrees on 3 December. Dr. Norman N.P. Leung, Chairman of the University Council, presided at the Congregation. In view of the severe pandemic situation, CUHK held the ceremony via live broadcast for the graduates and their families and friends to safeguard everyone’s health.

Six distinguished persons were conferred honorary degrees in recognition of their outstanding contributions to public welfare, scientific and educational progress, the promotion of human health, and sport. They are: Professor Sir Shankar Balasubramanian, Professor Sir John Bell, Dr. Charles Chen Yidan, Prof. Harvey F. Lodish, Dr. Shen Jinkang, and Professor Sir Steve Smith.

Professor Balasubramanian, Professor Bell and Professor Lodish were awarded the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa. Dr. Chen and Dr. Shen Jinkang were awarded the degree of Doctor of Social Science, honoris causa. Professor Smith was awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.

A total of 525 doctoral degrees were also conferred. These included one Doctor of Medicine, 508 Doctor of Philosophy, seven Doctor of Education, one Doctor of Music, five Doctor of Nursing, and three Doctor of Psychology.
