In celebration of its 50th anniversary and the Lunar New Year, the Art Museum is hosting the new exhibitions ‘Celebrating the Year of the Ox’ and ‘Artistic Confluence in Guangdong: Selected Painting and Calligraphy from Ming to Mid-Qing China (Collection of the Art Museum, CUHK)’.

In line with the Museum’s Lunar New Year tradition, ‘Celebrating the Year of the Ox’ showcases 12 ox-related items from the Museum’s collection. Comprising paintings, calligraphic works, ceramics and seals, the exhibition reveals the many functions, cultural significance and prestige of oxen in antiquity. The Museum has prepared an e-booklet for the exhibition in the style of a Chinese almanac, which will hopefully be as fun as it is informative.

Also a celebration of the Museum’s golden jubilee, ‘Artistic Confluence’ is a display of the rich and unique Lingnan culture through over 100 artworks originating from Guangdong gathered by the Museum over the years. With another phase coming in autumn, the exhibition covers the Ming and the early Qing dynasties in this spring instalment, featuring the works of such masters as Chen Xianzhang, Lin Liang, Zhang Mu and Chen Gongyin. A catalogue of the exhibition with essays by the curator, Dr. Peggy Ho, will be published in March.

The two exhibitions are open from now until 31 and 16 May, respectively. All members of the public are welcome, and admission is free. Note that visits to the Museum have to be booked in advance due to the pandemic. Please visit the Museum’s website for more information. The Museum is also providing learning resources and various activities, including expert talks on Guangdong art and culture between February and May, on its website and social media pages for those looking for an artistic vibe in the comfort of their home.
