Happy 100th Birthday, Prof. C.N. Yang!

CUHK hosts a series of celebration activities

Prof. Yang Chen-ning, Distinguished Professor-at-Large and Director of the Institute for Theoretical Physics, CUHK, will enter his 100th year in 2022. To celebrate Professor Yang’s birthday, the University has held a series of activities, starting with the ‘Celebratory Conference for CN Yang at One Hundred’ on 22 September. Jointly organized by CUHK, Tsinghua University and the Chinese Physical Society, the event was held in Beijing and Hong Kong via video conferencing. Professor Yang graced the occasion at Tsinghua University and thanked all participants for their warmest blessings.

Prof. Qiu Yong, President of Tsinghua University, Dr. Zhang Jie, President of the Chinese Physical Society, and Prof. Rocky S. Tuan, CUHK Vice-Chancellor, delivered celebratory addresses to Professor Yang at the event. Also in attendance were leaders in science and education communities around the world, as well as renowned scientists and scholars. Prof. Ambrose King, former CUHK Vice-Chancellor; Prof. Kenneth Young, Prof. Wang Jianfang, Dr. Chen Fong-ching and students of the Department of Physics featured in a short film to pay tributes to Professor Yang.

In his remark, Professor Tuan conveyed to Professor Yang the shower of respect and affection coming from CUHK members: ‘Professor Yang Chen-ning is well-known and highly acclaimed. He has made extraordinary achievements in scientific research. His way of living and learning has been exemplary. I’m particularly grateful for his support to CUHK for almost six decades. Besides setting up scholarships to help CUHK discover and nurture talents, he also donated his medals, books and manuscripts to pass on knowledge and culture. He has made immense contributions to the University. I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to Professor Yang for his support and dedication over the years.’

On the following day, notable scientists delivered lectures in Beijing to highlight Professor Yang’s remarkable achievements in physics.

An exhibition ‘Professor CN Yang at 100—Grand master of physics, stalwart friend of CUHK’ will be held until 28 January 2022 at the University Gallery, CUHK University Library. The exhibition showcases precious collections from Professor Yang and take audience on a journey through Professor Yang’s life and experiences. A public lecture was held on 25 September at L1, University Science Centre by the Department of Physics. In addition, CUHK and Tsinghua University will organize a Winter School on ‘Neutrinos—Astrophysics, Cosmology, and Particle Physics’.
