Two CUHK Members Selected as Outstanding Young Persons
The results of the 49th ‘Ten Outstanding Young Persons Selection’ were announced on 2 October. Among the seven awardees were two CUHK members, namely Prof. Jeremy Teoh, Assistant Dean (External Affairs) of the Faculty of Medicine, and Juris Doctor student Vivian Kong.
Prof. Jeremy Teoh, a urology specialist, grew up in a ‘family of medicine’. His father is the renowned urology specialist Dr. Timothy Teoh. His elder brother is Prof. Anthony Teoh, associate professor of surgery at CUHK’s Faculty of Medicine. Professor Teoh has been aspiring to improve cancer surgery and to cure cancer patients since childhood. He managed to formulate clinical guidelines for ‘Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumor’ with international experts and promote them to local public hospitals to reduce the chance of recurrence. Bearing in mind his grandmother’s teaching, he wholeheartedly performs his duties as a surgeon. He also strives to train young doctors and serve the public.
Hong Kong fencing athlete Vivian Kong was twice elected as the ‘Hong Kong Outstanding Young Athlete’ and ranked first in the world in 2019 in women’s epee. This year, she represented Hong Kong in the Olympic Games and National Games and won a bronze medal in the latter. She thanked her nominee, Prof. Patrick Yung, Assistant Dean (Alumni Affairs) of CUHK’s Faculty of Medicine, ‘He cured my knee injury, so that I am able to be a full-time athlete. Only after suffering an injury do I know that I really like fencing.’ In addition to her passion in sports, she also cares animal rights and environmental issues, and looks forward to joining the United Nations to solve issues such as marine ecology and global warming.
