Medical Intern-cum-Social Entrepreneur Awarded Top Tertiary Student

Results of the inaugural Outstanding Tertiary Students Award of Hong Kong have been released. Winners hail from various tertiary institutions, who excel in academic performance as well as in social contributions. CUHK graduand Dr. Li Yuen-yung is one of them. She was presented the award in the ceremony held on 7 October.

Dr. Li self-nominated to become a member of the Advisory Committee on Gifted Education and get involved in a think tank to weigh in on government policies. She is also passionate in serving the elderly. Her late grandmother was diagnosed with dementia. Though she couldn’t remember family members’ names, she still hoped to live with dignity and be able to take a shower or go to the washroom on her own. Dr. Li thereby founded a social enterprise to offer elderly products and designed a commode chair with her partner.

She recalled that her mother had worked long hours in the hospital during the SARS epidemic in 2003, which kindled her respect and admiration for frontline healthcare professionals. Dr. Li Yuen-yung, currently an intern, aspires to devote herself to public health policies.
