Mozart’s Complete Missae Breves Concert Series Begins

To commemorate the 265th anniversary of Mozart’s birth and the 230th anniversary of his death, the CU Chorus held the first of its lecture-concerts for the composer’s complete missae breves at St. Mary’s Church in Hung Hom on 28 November. They performed K.49 and K.65 of the missae breves, written by Mozart at the age of 12. The concert was performed to a full house and received wide acclaim, marking the successful launch of the Chorus’ five-year performance series on all of Mozart’s missae breves.

At the concert, Leon Chu, the music director and conductor, guided the audience through Mozart’s progress as a child with much insight, wit and the help of live demonstrations by the Chorus of the composer’s works. Prof. Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and a choral music lover, was among the attendees and applauded the CUHK students and alumni of the Chorus for their performance and efforts to promote music and art.

The Chorus plans to introduce to the Hong Kong audience in five lecture-concerts over five years all nine of Mozart’s missae breves, written originally for church ceremonies. This series, Chu hopes, will induct the local audience into the wonderful world of Mozart and classical music.

The full performance has been uploaded to the Chorus’ official Youtube channel.
