Four Year 2 students from the Department of Geography and Resource Management won the first runner-up in the 2013 Geographical Science Tournament for South China Universities, a regional geography competition held on 12 October in Hunan. The team also won the most creative research theme prize in the event. The competition was jointly organized by the Geographical Society of China and Sun Yat-Sen University with the aim of encouraging university students to investigate geographical issues through independent research.

CUHK was one of the nine teams from nine universities qualified for the finals. Under the supervision of Prof. Xu Jiang, the team comprising Chung Ho-ching, Ho Hei-lam, Wu Shuk-man and Chan Ling-leong, studied Hong Kong-style cooked food stalls from a cultural-geographical perspective. They received certificates and a cash award.
