The new University Library Extension was awarded the 'Platinum' rating by the Building Environmental Assessment Method (BEAM) Society of Hong Kong. This is the highest rating of BEAM, which measures environmental sustainability of buildings.
Last year the University Library System started delamping in the Reference Reading Room in the University Library and installing more motion sensors in group study rooms. Working in partnership with the Estates Management Office, it has measured lux levels, a measure of the intensity of light, throughout the University Library and have identified other possible areas for delamping. The Library will conduct a pilot project on the fourth floor of the University Library and Extension, which involves delamping, installing additional motion sensors, and reducing the length of time that the lights stay on in the book stacks after a user has moved away.
