Forum on Sustainable Management of Water Resources

Mr. Enoch Lam, director of Water Supplies of the HKSAR Government, delivering the keynote speech

CUHK Jockey Club Initiative Gaia held the forum on 'Sustainable Management of Water Resources in Hong Kong' at the Zero Carbon Building in Kowloon Bay on 31 October. The forum, under the Environment and Climate Change Forum Series, gathered experts from different background to share knowledge and insight on the sustainable management of water resources in Hong Kong. Over 120 participants from public and private sectors, local schools and tertiary institutions took part in the event.

Mr. Enoch Lam, director of Water Supplies of the HKSAR Government, was the keynote speaker. Other guest speakers included Ms. Su Liu, former head of Great China and Water Policy Research, Civic Exchange, and Prof. Carlos Lo, vice-chairperson of the Board of Governors, Friends of the Earth (HK).

Mr. Lam noted that major challenges to Hong Kong's water resources include climate change, population growth, and increasing demand for Dongjiang River in the Guangdong region. While there is no immediate impact, Hong Kong should be aware of the need for a total water management strategy and for the reduction in reliance on imported water from Dongjiang River. The Water Supplies Department has started to explore new water sources, improve the water supply network and cultivate a water conservation culture, and will review the Total Water Management Strategy launched in 2008.
