Vice-President Harry R. Wellman V ice-President H arry R. Wellman and M rs. W ellm an of the University of California visited H o n g K o n g for a week in m id-April. T h e y were on holiday , to u rin g th e F a r East. D u rin g their stay in H o n g Kong, D r. Wellman conferred w ith the "Vice-Chancellor and visited the th ree fo undation Colleges and m et w ith College officials. Registrar Returns M r. H .T . Wu, R egistrar of the University, resum ed his duties on Ju n e 1 after a long trip touring universities in th e U .S .A . and the U n ite d K ing d om s in April and May. H e returned to H o n g Kong on M ay 19. Ford Foundation Party A p arty of three senior officials of th e F o rd Fo u n d atio n in N ew York paid a visit to the Chinese University in late May. T h e y were D r. Ch amp io n W ard , D e p u ty V ice-President for Intern ation al P ro ­ g ram ; D r. Sh ep ard Stone, D irecto r of Internatio n al Affairs Program , and M r. H arry Case, F o rd Fo un d atio n representative in Manila. D r. S tone left on the 25th after a visit to the University site in the company of D r. C .T . Yung, Pro-V ice- Chancellor. D r. W ard and M r. Case stayed for a whole week visiting the th ree colleges and m eeting university and college officials. T h e y had several conferences w ith th e V ice-Chancellor and visited the University site w ith D r. Li, D r. Y u ng and M r. Szeto W a i, th e U n i versity Achitect. T h e y also m et the Chancellor, H .E . the Governor, Sir David T re n c h , and the Hon . D r. C.Y. Kwan, Ch airm an of th e University Council. Professor S .S . Chern Prof. S.S. C hern, of the University of California, a world reno u n ed mathematician and a m em b e r of th e Academic Advisory Board of th e Chinese University, will arrive in H o n g K o n g on July 22 w ith M rs. Ch ern for a short visit. Prof. C h ern has been on a lecturing to u r in Japan and T aiw an, this visit to H o n g K o n g will be his second since th e inauguration of the University. From Berkeley F o u r faculty mem b ers of the University of California at Berkeley will arrive on Ju n e 20 to discuss a co-operation p ro g ramm e w ith the Chinese University. T h e y w e r e : Professor Charles Glock (D irector) and D r. Ro bert M itchell of the Social Research Centre, Professor F ran ze S ch um an n (Chairman) and Joyce Kallgren, (V ice-Chairman) of th e C e n tre of Chinese Studies. T h e p arty leaves on Ju n e 27. Dr. H .T . Fong O n M ay 2 1 , D r. H .T . Fong, fo rm er director of th e P lanning Section of the ECA F E , was invited to give a talk on " T h e E conom ic P ro b lem s of Asia" to stu dents and staff of N ew Asia College. Professor Raysun Huang O n M ay 4 , D r. Raysun H uang , the Acting Vice-Chancelor of th e University of Malaya and D ean of th e F aculty of Science, visiting N ew Asia College and delivered a talk on "C h em ical E d u c atio n " to stu dents and staff of N ew Asia College. Amo ng the th re e h u n d re d people present at the talk were many science teachers from local schools. D r. H u a n g was invited to d in n e r after the talk by D r. T .C . Ou, Acting P resident of the College. Professor C.K. Yang Prof. C .K . Yang, External E x am iner of the University and presently Professor of Sociology at th e University of Hawaii, will arrive in H o n g K ong w ith his family in early July. H e is staying in H on g Kong, at C h u n g Chi College, for a few m o n th s to assist th e University in developing her social work programme. Prof. Yang is an authority in Chinese Village Studies and was in H o n g K on g last summ e r finishing his research on a book he was writing. H e h ad taug h t for m an v years at L in g -n a n University in Canton and has m any friends and stu d e n ts in th e Colony. Return of College Librarian M r. L eo H a u -sh en , L ib rarian of U n ited College, re tu rn ed to H o n g K o n g on M ay 28, from the U nited States, wh ere he has been participating in the Mu lti- A rea G ro u p L ib rarian P ro g ramm e at the invitiation o f th e U .S . State D ep artm e n t. O n his way to the U n ited States, M r. L eo also visited libraries in Britain, on a p ro g ramm e arranged by the B ritish Council, as well as libraries in G erm an y . Dean Arthur Daniels D r. A rth u r Daniels, D ean of the School of Physical Ed ucation, Ind ian a University, U .S .A ., visited N ew Asia College and U n ited College on M ay 20 and 21 repectively. D ean Daniels was in H o n g K o n g on an American specialist g ra n t given by th e U .S . State D e p a rtm e n t to stu dy th e facilities for physical education and recreation in H o n g Kong. 6
