Hsueh, Reader in Public A dm i n i s t r a t i on assigned to U n i t ed College, attended an international conference on Public A dm i n i s t r a t i on in We st Berlin f r om October 17 t h r o u gh October 24, 1966. T h e purpose of the Conference was to b r i ng together senior Asian academicians and administrators to discuss maior administrative problems of economic and social development and to exchange views and experience w i t h their counterparts in Ge r ma n y. D r . Hs u eh delivered the keynote address ‘ ‘ On the Role of Pu b l ic A dm i n i s t r a t i on in National D e v e l o pme n t" at the opening session of the Conference. • M r . T s o u, Dean of the Un i v e r s i ty Fa c u l ty of Science and Senior L e c t u r er in Ma t h ema t i cs at U n i t ed College, has been granted a leave to visit higher academic institutions overseas under the F o r d G r a nt Fa c u l ty De v e l o pme nt Scheme. • M r . Y ue Chee Ping, who graduated this year f r om C h u ng C h i College w i t h a B.Sc. cum laude, left for Canada to pursue graduate studies at the University of B r i t i sh Co l umb ia on a research fellowship. COLLEGE NEWS I N BRIEF • U n i t ed College celebrated its T e n t h An n i v e r s a ry on October 20, 1966 w i t h a series of academic and social events taking place between that day and the end of the year. A ball was held in the G r a nd Ball R o om of the H i l t o n Ho t el on the 20th, where the H o n. F u n g Ping-fan, C.B.E., K . S t. J., J.P., Ch a i r man of the College's Board of Trustees, acted as host on behalf of the College. T h e College Board of Trustees has appointed a c omm i t t ee to launch a campaign for the donation of prizes to be awarded to the College's best students. O t h er events in celebration of the College T e n t h An n i v e r s a ry i n the c om i ng mo n t hs w i ll be reported in the subsequent issues of this Bulletin. • Over 700 students and staff members of New- Asia College celebrated the An n i v e r s a ry of Confucius' B i r t h d a y, the 17th An n i v e r s a ry of the College's Foundation and the Teachers' Day on September 28. D r . T . C . O u , t h e President, addressed the assembly. H e gave a brief history of the f o u n d i ng of N ew Asia, emphasizing the Co n f u c i an principles as the g u i d i ng principles for the College. Representatives of the College Council, the A l u m n i Association and the Student U n i o n of the College also spoke. Other functions for the day included a garden party at the campus and a luncheon party in the College D i n i n g Hall. • Marriage Laws and Customs of China by D r . Ve r m i er Y . Chiu , the late Ch a i r man of the Board of Governors of N e w Asia College, came off the press on October 16 , 1966 to ma rk the second anniversary of the author's death. T h e book was published by N e w Asia's I n s t i t u te of Ad v a n c ed Chinese Studies and Research in token of the College's grateful remembrance of D r . Ch i u 's eminent service to the College. I t is an i mp o r t a nt and comprehensive treatise on the marriage law in force in the C h ' i ng Dy n a s ty as we ll as in various periods in different parts of China. • M r . T s c h a ng Hsi L i n , L e c t u r er of Geography at C h u ng Ch i, presented a paper in absentia on " M a r i n e Potholes of H o n g K o n g ” to the 11th Pacific Science Congress held in T o k y o f r om Au g u st 22 to September 10, 1966. A n abstract of his paper was published in the Geographical Review of Japan, Vo l. 39 N o . 9. • D r . Y . K . Chau, L e c t u r er and Ch a i r man of the Ch em i s t ry De p a r t me n t, C h u ng C h i College, in collaberation w i t h Messrs, L . Chuecas and J.P. Riley, had a paper published in the Proceedings, 11th Pacific Science Congress , Tokyo, 1966, V o l. 5 , No. 37. T h e title of the paper was: " D e t e r m i n a t i on of amino acids in marine p h y t o p l a n k t on by gas-liquid chromatography". • D r . S.G. Ma s o n, Professor of Physical Chemistry and Ch a i r man of the De p a r t me nt of Ch em i s t ry of M c G i l l Un i v e r s i t y, gave a lecture at U n i t ed College on " K i n l t i c T h e o ry of F l o w i ng Dispersions.” D r . Ma s o n, an a u t h o r i ty i n the field of Co l l o id Chemistry, is a Research D i r e c t or of the Pu lp and Paper Research I n s t i t u te of Canada. 7
