14 C hina’s economic development is clustered around the Pearl River Delta, the Yangtze River Delta, and the Bohai Sea Rim, whose centres are respectively Shenzhen, Shanghai and Beijing. Though the three cities have similar GDPs, Shenzhen is overshadowed by the other two when it comes to the development of higher education and technology. Beijing has over 30 well-known institutions and 50 research institutes, Shanghai has over 20 of each, but Shenzhen has only one university. Therefore it stands to benefit from collaborating with CUHK. As Prof. Lawrence Lau has pointed out, Hong Kong has much to offer in terms of its ‘decades of experience in education and research, and its unique geographical location.’ Both Parties To Benefit Chinese University Bulletin No. 1, 2009
