The programme equips students with geographical theories, methods and skills in general, and utilization and management of natural and environmental resources in particular. The department, through its curriculum, strives to instil professionalism into a conventional academic discipline with wide-ranging practical applications. Teaching and research concentrate on three areas: geographical techniques, physical and environmental systems, and urban and regional systems. Emphasis is placed on the use of an integrative approach and geoinformation technology in the study and resolution of local and regional problems involving complex interactions among natural resources, environment, and human activities. Local and overseas field trips are regularly organized to enrich students’ learning. It also administers postgraduate programmes leading to MPhil and PhD degrees. Over 40 courses are offered in the areas of political theory, comparative politics, international relations, political economy, gender politics, public administration, public policy, Hong Kong politics, Chinese politics, and politics- cognate subjects in law, e.g. constitutional law. The law minor programmes is being phased out and will not be offered to students admitted in and after 2005–06. It specializes in the study of the generation, transmission and interpretation of various forms of mediated information. The school is dedicated to producing communication experts in information technology who can generate high quality communication content, products and services. The undergraduate programme puts equal emphasis on theoretical and professional training. Students are grounded in professional knowledge and instilled with breadth of vision and professional ethics.
