Students are encouraged to develop independent and critical thinking, identify with the humanistic values and ethics of the social work profession, and maintain a special concern for the vulnerable groups in society. Exchanges between students and teachers through small-group and individual contacts, and integration of theory and practice through field practice in local and overseas settings are emphasized in the curriculum. The department is the pioneer of social work education and research in Hong Kong. Besides the undergraduate programme, it offers postgraduate programmes leading to the degrees of MSW, MSSc (Social Work), MA (Family Counselling and Family Education), MA (Social Service Management), MPhil and PhD.
