CUHK Newsletter Over 100 prominent academics and businessmen from all over Asia, the United States, Australia, the Middle East and Europe attended the conference and presented papers on problems and issues relating to business management, investment, and trade development in Asia. With its headquarters in the United States, the Academy of International Business aims to promote and facilitate research in international business. AIBSEAR was established in 1985 and has since been chaired by Prof. K. C. Mun, dean of business administration, CUHK. College Graduations New Asia College and Shaw College held their graduations at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall last month. The 39th farewell assembly in honour of the 1989-90 graduates of New Asia College was held on 10th June. There were 431 graduates this year. Prof. T. B. Lin, head of the college, officiated at the ceremony and Prof. Ambrose Y.C. King, pro-vice-chancellor of the University, was invited to address the graduates. Souvenirs were exchanged amongst the representatives of the graduates, the college and the student union. After a tree-planting ceremony, Prof. Lin led all the staff and graduates to the New Asia Concourse for a group photo, and refreshments were then served in the Yun Chi Hsien and the student common room. Over 1,000 guests attended the function. Shaw College held its first graduation ceremony on 16th June. Prof. Baysung Hsu, pro-vice-chancellor, was the guest of honour. He addressed the graduates and, together with Prof. C. N. Chen, the college head, and other college trustees, presented certificates of merit to prize winners. The ceremony was followed by phototaking and a tea reception on the college campus. There were 66 graduates this year. 393 to be Awarded Diploma-in-Education This year, a total of 393 students of the School of Education have completed programmes leading to the postgraduate Diploma-in-Education. Of these, 131 are from the one-year full-time programme, 129 from the two-year part-time day programme and 133 from the two-year part-time evening programme. They have passed both the theory and teaching practice examinations. Conference on the Teaching of English Language/Literature A conference on 'the Teaching of English Language Literature in the Hong Kong Context' took place on the campus from 7th to 9th June. Jointly organized by the English Department and the English Language Teaching Unit of the University, the British Council, and the Secondary English Teachers Association, the conference offered an innovative blend of papers and workshops aimed at exploring English language and literature teaching at both the tertiary and the secondary school levels. There were some 50 presentations covering a wide range of topics such as teaching methodology, course and syllabus design, and the uses of technology in the classroom. Speakers for the plenary sessions included noted English language teaching specialist Prof. H. Douglas Brown of San Francisco State University, literature specialist Prof. David Punter of the University of Stirling, and stylistics expert Dr. Alan Durant of the University of Strathclyde. Teachers and students from three local secondary schools were also invited to demonstrate creative teaching techniques. 4
