CUHK Newsletter Services to the Community and International Organizations * Mr. Stephen C. M. Yam, lecturer in accountancy, has been appointed by the Sha Tin District Office as a member of its Youth Committee from 1st April 1990 to 31st March 1991. * Prof. S. W. Tam, dean of graduate school and professor of chemistry, and Prof. To Cho-yee, professor of education, have been appointed by HE the Governor as members of the Hong Kong Co u n c il for Academic Accreditation for one year from 8th June 1990. * Prof. T. B. Lin, professor of economics, has been reappointed a member of the Air Transport Licensing Authority by HE the Governor for two years from 15th May 1990. * Miss Mary Lena Fung, senior physical education instructor, has been invited by the Hong Kong Sports Association for the Physically Disabled to serve as the chairperson of its Technical Sub-committee for one year from January 1990. * Mr. S. S. Tam, assistant secretary. Personnel Section, Secretariat, has been invited to serve as honorary general secretary of the South China Athletic Association for one year from 1st June 1990. * Prof. S. T. Chang, professor of biology, has been invited to serve as a member of the editorial board of World Journal of Microbiology & Biotechnology. * Dr. K. M. Chan, reader in orthopaedics and traumatology, has been elected a member of the Executive Committee of the International Federation of Sports Medicine for four years from 1990 to 1994. Dr. Chan has also been appointed chairman of the federation's Public Relations Commission. * Dr. Wong Tze Wai, senior lecturer in community and family medicine, has been appointed a member of the Working Party on Chinese Medicine by the Secretary for Health and Welfare from 30th May 1990. Dr.Wong has also been appointed a member of the Scientific Working Group on AIDS under the Advisory Council on AIDS by the Department of Health, Hong Kong Government. (All information in this section is provided by the Information Office) Side Lights New Exhibition at the Art Gallery: Chinese Ivories from the Kwan Collection The Art Gallery w i ll mount an exhibition of ‘Chinese Ivories from the Kwan Collection' in the West Wing Galleries f r om 28th July to 14th October 1990. There will be 200 items of exhibits from the collection of Dr. Simon Kwan, a well-known architect and collector of Chinese art. Together these exhibits present a comprehensive survey of the historical development of the art of ivory carving in China. Forty-five items are bone and ivory carvings of the Shang to the Yuan period. They include utilitarian objects, ornaments, fittings and game accessories. The other 155 items comprising figures, scholar's articles, vessels and decorative objects are carvings of the Ming and the Qing periods. Apart from a few pieces of imperial production, most items come from different provinces showing the regional characteristics of the Jiangnan, Guangdong, Fujian and Beijing schools. A preview of the exhibition will be held on 27th July at 4.30 p.m. A ll arc welcome.
