Since 1st August 1995, central Registry functions have been classified into two main areas. The Academic Secretariat, headed by the deputy registrar (academic affairs) Mrs. Ho Wan Siu-wan, is mainly responsible for providing support for the Senate and other administrative areas including academic planning, curriculum structure and programmes, academic policy, teaching quality assurance, liaison with the UGC, and academic information. The Office of Registry Services, headed by the deputy registrar (registry services) Mr. Lee Shu-wing, is mainly responsible for providing services in the admission, registration, examination, and graduation of students, both undergraduate and postgraduate. It should be noted that the existing Academic Section has been incorporated into the Academic Secretariat; the deputy registrar (academic affairs) has also been appointed as acting registrar for the purpose of serving as secretary of the Senate. Both deputy registrars now report to a pro-vice-chancellor. In line with the spirit of decentralization, faculty offices have been separated from the Registry. Following the change, staff in these offices now report to their faculty deans, and the title 'assistant registrar' has been converted to 'faculty secretary'. In the Office of General Education, the administrative assistant now reports to the director of general education. A New Audio Visual Services Unit The Administrative Affairs Committee has resolved that the AV Technical Support Services, hitherto under the supervision of the Technical Services Unit Management Committee, be renamed the Audio Visual Services Unit (AVSU), and is to operate as a university-wide service unit under the Office of Director of Administrative Services from 1st July 1995. The office of AVSU is located in Room 210 of Pi Ch'iu Building. Mr. Benny Chik is the Technical Supervisor and can be reached at Ext. 8928 and fax 2603 5301. Service Scope The staff of AVSU are now grouped into two service teams. The operation and maintenance team will provide maintenance and repair services to users, give technical assistance and support to departments, and operate a loan counter which provides AV aids and equipment for regular classroom sessions, meetings and student activities. The planning, consultation and support team will concentrate on the design and planning of the installation of AV equipment in new buildings as well as equipment upgrading. New Measures The following new measures will be introduced in September 1995: • Emergency call service for classroom teaching to be available from 8.15 a.m. to 8.15 p.m. during term time to ensure that all regular teaching sessions including that
