二零零二年榮譽博士學位領受人簡介 Profiles of 2002 Honorary Degree Graduates 榮譽文學博士 季羨林敎授 國學泰斗季羨林敎授是享譽國際的東方學家、 語言學家、文學家及翻譯名師。他對印度語言形態 學、原始佛敎語言、吐火羅文、梵文文學等研究均 作出重大貢獻。他精通英語、德語、梵文、巴利文 及吐火羅文。季敎授也是印度及佛敎史的權威學 者，在中印文化關係以及佛敎對中國文化的影響方 面均有極精闢的研究。 季敎授於一九三四年在北京清華大學外語系畢 業，其後負笈德國，入讀著名的哥廷根大學，主修 印度學，學習梵文、巴利文、吐火羅文等語言及文 化，一九四一年獲授哲學博士學位。一九四六年回 國，受聘為北京大學東方語言文學系敎授兼系主 任，自此展開在北大長達五十多年的敎研工作。季 敎授曾於一九七八年擔任北京大學副校長和北大南 亞研究所所長，又於一九八四年及一九九零年分別 出任北大校務委員會副主任及名譽副主任。 季敎授雖年愈九十，仍孜孜不倦，著作不斷。 他的主要著作有《糖史》、《天竺心影》、《留德十 年》、《原始佛敎的語言問題》、《印度古代語言論 集》、《中印文化關係史論文集》、《牛棚雜憶 》 ，譯 作有《羅摩衍那》、《沙恭達羅》、《優哩婆濕》、《大 唐西域記校注》等，並用英文寫成《吐火羅文 A 彌勒 會見記劇本》。 此外，季敎授對促進東方語文的研究也不遺餘 力。他曾擔任中國外國文學學會會長：、中國敦煌吐 魯番學會會長、中國語言學會會長、中國史學會常 務理事、中國作家協會理事等重要職務。 季敎授不單在學術上卓有成就，在公共服務 方面同樣貢獻良多。他曾擔任中國人民政治協商 會議全國委員會委員及全國人民代表大會常務委 員會委員。 季敎授曾於一九八七及一九八八年訪問中大，出 席文物館舉辦的國際敦煌吐魯番學術會議及文物展 覽，主持講座及宣讀論文，並不斷提供寶貴意見，對 大學的學術發展，貢獻良多。 Doctor of Literature, honoris causa Prof. Ji Xianlin A n eminent scholar in oriental studies, a world-renowned linguist and a great master in literature and translation. Prof. Ji Xianlin is among the very few scholars worldwide who have w o n international acclaim for their works in Indian linguistics, primeval Buddhist languages, Tocharian languages, and Sanskrit literature. Prof. Ji is proficient i n English, Ge rman, Sanskrit, Pali, and Tocharian languages. He is highly regarded for his research i n the history of India and Buddhism, which has led to profound understanding of Indo-Chinese relationship and the impact of Buddhism on Chinese culture. I n 1934 Prof. Ji graduated from the Department of Western Literature at Tsinghua University, Beijing. He t hen p u r s u ed I n d i an s t ud i es at Ge o r g - Au g u s t- Universit ä t Göttingen and was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy i n 1941. He returned to China i n 1946, was appo i n t ed professor and director of the Department of Oriental Languages at Peking University, and has stayed there for more than five decades. I n 1978 he was made a vice-president of Peking University and director of the South Asian Studies Research Institute. In 1984, he became the vice-president of the University Counc il of Peking Un i ve r s i t y, and later i n 1990 an honorary vice-president. Prof. Ji's major publications i nc l uded Tang shi (《糖史》), Tian Zhu xin ying (《天竺心影》), Liu De shi nian (《留德十年》), Yuan shi Fo Jian de yu yan wen ti (《原始佛敎的語言問題》), Yin Du gu dai yu yan lun ji (《印度 古代語言論集》), Zhong Yin wen hua guan xi shi lun wen ji (《中印文化關係史論文集》）, translation wo r ks Ramayana, Sakuntala, Vikramovasiya, Da Tang Xi Yu ji jiao zhu (《大唐西 域記校注 》) and Niu peng za yi (《牛棚雜憶》 ).He also wr o te Tocharian A Maitreyasamiti- Nataka i n English. Besides his outstanding academic ac comp l i shmen t s, Prof. Ji has made significant contributions to public service. He has been a member of the Standing Committee of the Na t i onal People's Congress and a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Prof. Ji visited The Chinese University of Hong Kong i n 1987 at the invitation of the A r t Museum to participate i n the Sympo s i um and Exh i b i t i on on Dunhuang and Turfan Studies where he presented an a c adem ic p a p e r. He v i s i t ed t he Ch i nese University again i n 1988 and enlightened students a nd f a c u l t y b y h is l ec t u r es o n T o c h a r i an A Ma i t r e y a s am i t i - Na t a ka s c r i pt a nd Ma h a y a na Buddhism. 榮譽理學博士 Prof. Ferid Murad Prof. Ferid Murad於 一 九九八年獲頒諾貝爾生理 學或醫學獎，現任美國德 克薩斯大學侯斯頓醫學院 綜合生物學及藥理學系講 座敎授兼系主任。 Prof. Murad 在醫學學術 研究方面成就卓著，在醫 學工業方面也貢獻良多， 曾出任大型藥理研究企業 的主管。他的主要研究範 疇為細胞信號分子的傳遞 機制，在研究氧化氮於心 血管系統的信號傳遞功能時，證實這種氣體在引致 血管舒張的機制中扮演重要的角色 。P r o f . Murad 的 研究成就，令他與從事相類研究的學者獲頒一九九 八年諾貝爾生理學或醫學獎。這些發現亦導致新的 陽痿治療口服藥物「威而鋼」的面世。氧化氮與心肺 機能、感染及人體對抗腫瘤的機制有很密切的關 係 ， 對 有 關 疾 病 的 療 治 帶 來 新 希 望， Prof. Mu r a d 的研究為細胞信號分子研究 開拓了新的領域。 Prof. Murad 曾於二零零零年三月訪問 本校並主持講座，闡釋他在氧化氮作為信 號分子的功能的研究 。Prof. Murad 復出任 中大與中國軍事醫學科學院聯合設立的上 皮細胞生物學研究中心的榮譽主任，對該 中心的研究及發展，貢獻良多。 Doctor of Science, honoris causa Prof. Ferid Murad Prof. Mu r ad has made outstanding achievements in both academic medicine and the pharmacological industry. He has led research i n major pharmaceutical corporations and his wo rk has focused on cell signalling and signal t r an s du c t i on systems. He d i scove r ed the n ew properties of nitric oxide — a colourless, odourless gas that acts as a messenger to tell blood vessels to relax and widen, lowering blood pressure. For his discoveries, Prof. Mu r ad shared the Nobel Prize i n Physiology / Medicine i n 1998 w i t h t wo other scholars. Not only have these discoveries l ed to the d e v e l o pme nt of V i ag ra f or t r ea t i ng impotence, nitric oxide is also f ound to be involved i n heart function, infectious and l ung problems and the defence of the body against t umou rs and thus have the potential to treat the relevant diseases. His research has opened u p n ew ho r i z ons f or the research of cell signalling. I n March 2000, Prof. Mu r ad visited The Chinese Un i ve r s i ty of Ho ng Kong and delivered a pub l ic lecture on 'Cellular Signalling w i t h Nitric Oxide and Cyclic GMP'. He is also the honorary director of the Ep i t he l i al Ce ll B i o l ogy Research Centre of the University wh i ch was established i n collaboration w i t h the Chinese Ac ademy of M i l i t a ry Med i c al Sciences.
