F e hl I n the b e g i n n i ng of 1965, the Ec o n om ic Research Centre was officially set up, under the I n s t i t u te of Social Studies and the Huma n i t i es an d it carried on the research project w h i c h began i n July 1964, to study the supply and demand of agricultural products f r om the standpoint of H o n g K o n g. Op e r a t i ng under an agreement w i t h the U . S. De p a r t me n t of Ag r i c u l t u r e, the project w i ll f o rm part of the De p a r t me n t 's evaluation of l o n g - t e rm prospects for the supply of, and d ema nd for, agricultural products t h r o u g h o ut the wo r l d . T h e Centre is located at H a n g Seng Bank Bu i l d i n g, 677 Na t h an Road, K o w l o o n. I n A p r i l 1965, Sir L i n d s ay Rid e was i n v i t ed to be a Research Fellow, and the I n s t i t u te of Social Studies and the Huma n i t i es embarked on a research project on the history of th e O l d Protestant Cemetery of Macao and the East I n d ia Comp a ny in south Ch i na d u r i ng the period 1800-1860, and biographi c studies of all those b u r i ed there. I n J u ly 1965, M r . Ch a ng T e - c h ' a n g, at one t i me Professor of H i s t o ry at the Na t i o n a l T s i n g h ua University, Peiping, was also invited to be a Research Fellow at the I n s t i t u te to wo rk on the diary (1863- 1889) of A i r. L i T z ' u - m i n g , wh i l e have been overlooked as an i mp o r t a nt source of i n f o r ma t i on for mo d e rn Chinese Fistory I n a u t umn 1964, a Village Research Project was initiated by C h u ng C h i College a t T a i Po T a n partly for adapting sociological instruction to Chines e social reality and partly to foster researc h amo ng members of the staff. T h e project has since been placed under the Institute. T h e Mass Commu n i c a t i on Centre was also established in a u t umn 1965 under the directorship of Professor Charles Clayton. T h e Centre is located at L i u C h o ng H i n g Bu i l d i n g, 593-601 Na t h an Road, K o w l o o n.
