L i u T s u - r u received his early education at N a n k i ng M i d d l e School, an affiliated school of the Un i v e r s i ty of Na n k i n g, and later entered the L a w School of F u t an Un i v e r s i ty in Shanghai. He graduated i n 1940 ill C h u n g k i ng w i t h the degree o f L L . B . after the Un i v e r s i ty had mo v ed to the wa r t i me Capital. U p o n graduation, he was appointed a Grade I Section M e m b er of the Executive Y u an and was attached to its Conference (ministerial meetings) Section. I n 1945, he j o i n ed the Ch i na Portland Cemen t Co., L t d . , as secretary to its N a n k i ng office and served i n this capacity u n t il 1948 wh en he came to H o n g K o n g and established himself in business. I n the period 1955-58, he served as research assistant to Professor B. Harrison, Head of the H i s t o ry De p a r t me n t of the Un i v e r s i ty of H o n g K o n g i n connection w i t h a scheme executed on behalf of Messrs. Jardine, Ma t h e s on & C o . , L t d . F r om 1959 to 1961, he wo r k ed free-lance, c o n t r i b u t i ng documentary materials of historical interes t to we l l - k n own local industrial, s h i p p i ng an d u t i l i ty companies. I n 1961, at the i n v i t a t i o n of M r . G . W . Bonsall, then A c t i ng L i b r a r i an of the Un i v e r s i ty of H o n g K o n g, he participated in H o n g K o n g 's c o n t r i b u t i on towards “ A Bibliography of Western Language Newspapers Published in or about China d u r i ng the Period 1800-1911", a wo rk initiated by D r . F . H . K i n g of Ha r v a r d, and sponsored by H a r v a rd Un i v e r s i t y. Shortly after his a p p o i n t me nt as Assistant Registrar of U n i t ed College, in 1961, M r . L i u , together w i t h representatives of the other t wo Fo u n d a t i on Colleges, visited universities i n U n i t ed K i n g d om for two mo n t hs to study university administration under the j o i nt sponsorship of the B r i t i sh Co u n c il and the H o n g K o n g Go v e r nme n t. 6
