Speaks with Eloquence in Speech Contest

Twenty CUHK students competed for the championships in the 9th CU Speech Contest Finals held on 7 March at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. The contest was jointly organized by the Office of Students Affairs, the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, the Department of English, the English Language Teaching Unit, the Independent Learning Centre, the Yale-China Chinese Language Centre and the Office of the Arts Administrator, with the aim of promoting the art of public speaking and providing students with an opportunity to improve their language skills. More than 900 people, including secondary school teachers and students, were in attendance.

This year’s topic was ‘What can we do to make Hong Kong a fairer society?’ The winner of the English section will represent CUHK to take part in the ‘21st Century Cup’ National English Speaking Competition. List of winners and runner-ups are as follows:

Cantonese (native) section

Champion: Li Ka-kit (English Studies and English Language Education, Year 4)

1st runner-up: Ng Hon-fai (Government and Public Administration, Year 3)

Cantonese (non-native) section

Champion: Weng Zang-ye (Integrated BBA Programme, Year 2)

1st runner-up: Chao Hao (Engineering Foundation Course, Year 1)

Putonghua (non-native) section

Champion: Wong Po-yee (English, Year 1)

1st runner-up: Leung Yiu-fai (Accountancy, Year 1)

English (non-native) section

Champion: Tang Chun-yin (Global Business Studies, Year 2)

1st runner-up: Yip Ho-long (Quantitative Finance, Year 4)
